At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary
This two-year term position will be responsible for managing the research and engagement activities of the 'Decolonizing Curation' research cluster. The research cluster is composed of Faculty members from various department at UBC, as well as Indigenous partners, and museum and repository representatives. Responsibilities include organization and management of meetings, data and training resource management, project records management, report preparation, website management and managing financial transactions by liaising with ASC Finance. The Project Coordinator will work closely with the PI for budgeting and management of expenditures related to the project's activities. The Project Coordinator will interact regularly with the core leadership team and will be responsible for liaising with cluster members.

Organizational Status
The position reports to the PI and core leadership group of the research cluster.

Work Performed

The position, under the direction of the core leadership group, develops, implements, and evaluates research and engagement activities for the research cluster "Decolonizing Curation: Addressing the Global Heritage Repository Crisis in the Age of UNDRIP (United nations Declarations on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples)".

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop work plans and timelines to achieve the cluster's stated deliverables, and ensure the successful implementation of these plans in adherence with funding requirements.
  • Monitor progress and assess variances from the cluster's plans, budgets, and schedules; develop and implement changes as necessary.
  • Identify appropriate funding opportunities and develop grant applications to support cluster research and goals.
  • Manage the financial reporting, budget and expenditures to ensure funds are spent effectively.

Monthly Tasks

This project covers 24 months. The Project Coordinator's role is to assist the PI in facilitating the cluster's activities, ensure the appropriate use and accounting of funds, keeps a central database of research tasks, and maintains the core shared databases. The Project Coordinator's tasks can be summarized by month as:

  • Contact and planning with the PI
  • Managing finances
  • Monitoring and compiling research steps
  • Developing future research, teaching and engagement avenues, including grants

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Project Coordinator will be expected to make independent decisions related to the day-to-day coordination of the research team based on guidance, input, and advice from Dr. Camilla Speller (PI) and the core leadership group. Inappropriate judgment could hinder the team's capacity to achieve its deliverables, could damage relationships with team members, and could negatively impact the reputation of UBC. Error in judgment might also result in difficult working relationships with project partners and researchers. It could also mean loss of trust and credibility to project partners, particularly with Indigenous community partners.

Supervision Received
The position works under general direction of the core leadership group via the PI (Camilla Speller). Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of objectives by the core leadership group.

Supervision Given
This position is guided by the collective work/ambitions of the research team, which are themselves guided by direction and questions from the partner Indigenous communities. These goals are defined in part through previous collaborative practice and in part as emergent elements of ongoing discussion and development. The core leadership group assumes major responsibilities (budget etc.) for the project; the Project Director is the lead administrator. The Project Coordinator may be required to manage and provide supervision to project students, or to manage and supervise engagement events.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own

Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in relevant discipline with subject specialty related to the arts and cultures of Indigenous communities, laboratories and/or museums; graduate training in a relevant field is an asset.

  • Demonstrated diplomacy in working with cultural communities and other program partners.
  • Requires excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills.
  • Needs to be familiar with programs in Microsoft Office suite and other layout software.
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours when required.
