At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary

  • Candidate will be working as a Clinical Trial Stroke Exercise Professional who will facilitate rehabilitation programs for stroke patients.

Organizational Status

  • The candidate will be hired under the Department of Physical Therapy, and will facilitate rehabilitation programs for stroke patients. The candidate will report to Dr. Janice Eng and her research coordinator thru emails, phone calls and Zoom meetings.

Work Performed

  • Candidate will facilitate one-on-one rehabilitation programs to patients who have had a stroke.
  • Candidate will guide stroke patients (and sometimes caregiver or family of the stroke patient) appropriately thru emails, Zoom meetings and phone calls.
  • Candidate must have a wide latitude for exercising independent initiative, and judgement in progressing the stroke patient on an individual basis based on patient's activity level and capability, and must ensure safety of the patient during exercise sessions that will be delivered remotely.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

  • The candidate will facilitate rehabilitation programs to stroke patients according to study protocols; however, every patient is different and will require critical-decision making to optimize the rehabilitation results. There is a huge risk if the candidate is not experienced or has error in judgement that could result in falls or cardiovascular events of patients. Inappropriate judgment could result in harm to the patients. As the candidate is working remotely with patients, there is a higher risk of falls because the candidate cannot physically help the patient if they lose their balance. Thus, an error in judgement could have huge impact.
  • Inappropriate manners or instructions could result in patients and their families or caregivers becoming frustrated, angry or seeking compensation.
  • Inattention to paperwork detail (errors on forms) and study protocol could jeopardize the results to clinical trials.

Supervision Received

  • The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Janice Eng, Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and her research coordinator. The candidate will be working physically in their own home setting, and remotely with vulnerable, frail people who have had a stroke. Thus, they must have a high level of independence and competence in their abilities to work with stroke patients.

Supervision Given

  • May be required to provide direction to stroke patient's caregiver or family to adhere to the study protocol.

Minimum Qualifications

  • University degree in relevant discipline or completion of a technical program and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • A background in kinesiology, rehabilitation assistant, or fitness training and must have at least 5 years of experience as an exercise instructor with older adults, especially frail older adults with chronic health conditions.
  • Candidates with experience in delivering exercise by videoconference will be preferred.
  • Candidate must have prior experience in working with people with stroke, including understanding the pathology of stroke, and working with frailer older adults or stroke patients with disabilities.
  • Candidate must have prior experience in working and communicating with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with research activities is an asset.
