The Indigenous Relations Advisor – Indigenous Relations (IR) will be primarily supporting new and existing projects through responsive Indigenous business and relationship engagement. The successful candidate will use strategic thinking and relationship building skills to further Valard's Indigenous engagement efforts.

Working closely with the Indigenous Relations team and other business units, this role will enhance existing Indigenous relationships while supporting business growth opportunities.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated professional with a track record in cultivating robust relationships, a background in the energy sector, and a comprehensive grasp of Indigenous matters in Ontario and across Canada.

Position Location:

Toronto, Ontario: The position is preferred in Toronto, Mississauga, or London. Frequent travel to communities throughout Ontario is essential for success.

Requirements:

The role involves early engagement with communities to involve Valard in energy projects. Promoting Valard's core business competencies to potential clients and partners is vital.

Success will come from developing loyal relationships through meaningful engagement, laying the foundations for long-term trust with local and Indigenous communities. The primary focus will be on local communities, including First Nations, and other Indigenous groups recognized by the Government of Canada.

  • Initiate and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities and their economic development organizations in Ontario.
  • Develop relationships with government agencies, crown corporations, and utilities in Ontario.
  • Lead Indigenous engagement for strategic projects, finding solutions to provide Indigenous content and support successful bids.
  • Create sustainable business partnerships with First Nations on energy projects through MOUs and contracts.
  • Build relationships with the private sector business community to establish partnerships in Valard's core competencies.
  • Support strategic planning, industry conferences, and sponsorships related to Indigenous engagement.
  • Contribute to Indigenous engagement plans, set achievable targets, and stay aware of relevant issues in Ontario.
  • Report on issues affecting participation in the regional economy and represent Valard at industry events.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 – 10 years of experience.
  • Undergraduate degree in business administration or related discipline preferred.
  • Combination of education and experience is acceptable, especially in Indigenous relations and energy generation/construction.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & ATTRIBUTES:

  • Self-motivated leader with management experience in strategy development.
  • Strong critical analysis and research skills.
  • Understanding of Indigenous cultures and communities.
  • Ability to develop strategic priorities reflecting contemporary Indigenous community needs.
  • Track record of positive stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience in managing complex and sensitive issues.
  • Exceptional presentation and communication skills.
  • Strategic communicator with political acumen.
  • Requirement for significant travel, including remote areas.
