Job Summary
Training coordinator and Supervisor creates, implements, and manages the VCHRI MAF training program. Supervises and oversees training for staff and students, and provides facility orientation to all new users. Responsible for administration of continuing education, training course schedule, and certification for facility staff. Maintains and updates facility Standard Operating Procedures. Reviews and provides guidance on protocol submissions. Assists with UILO contract administration. Ensures study protocols, UBC Animal Care Committee, Canadian council on Animal Care and Good Laboratory Practices are followed in compliance with regulations.

Organizational Status
Reports directly to the manager. Supervises and trains husbandry staff, investigators, faculty, research assistants, students and others.

Work Performed
- Following the UBC Animal Care Services Training SOPs, leads the UBC mandatory training program in house to all VCHRI Medical Animal Facilities (MAF).

- Submits all relevant training related documents, course completion and proficiency testing results to MAF management and UBC. Provides additional technical training workshops for standard procedures regarding handling and care, as required.
- Maintains related documentation such as manuals, computer files, and reference materials.
- Establishes and maintains a Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure compliance with the UBC Animal Care Committee, the Canadian Council on Animal Care and regulatory bodies such as Standards Council Canada and the Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines.
- Prepares quality reports for annual review of the QMS. Ensures that the performance of the QMS is periodically reviewed by VCHRI management for effectiveness, continuing suitability and identifying areas needing improvement. Provides input and recommendations for workflow improvements.
- Monitors, investigates, identifies quality issues and identifies training requirements. Analyzes failures in processes and if needed, performs root cause analyses. Works in collaboration with management to implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensures all facility equipment meets quality and safety standards, and is maintained and certified in accordance with the manufacture's recommendations.
- Oversees the progress of projects and participates in complex research protocols and labs
- Performs administrative duties such as maintaining logs of facility-generated data, writing and updating facility Standard Operating Procedures, policies, and guidelines.
- Provides instruction and training in the use of specialized equipment and techniques.
- Performs regular inspections on all the facility equipment, and maintains an up to date inventory list of all equipment.
- Advises on facility technical equipment activities such as equipment maintenance, repairs, acceptance testing and certification. Regularly collaborates with suppliers, as required.
- Leads "New User Orientation and Training" for all researchers, staff and users of the facility.
- Oversees day-to-day operations of husbandry staff to ensure efficient and effective workflow.
- Assists with UILO contract administration.
- Stays current in new research techniques and developments through continuing education, maintains Registered Veterinary Technology status, RLAT certification, as well as national and regional CALAS membership.
- Acts as Safety Committee Officer for the animal unit within the building, attends safety meetings and coordinates safety programs
- Ensures adherence to protocols, standard operating procedures, policies, guidelines, and safety regulations.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
- The incumbent will be depended upon to ensure the smooth, efficient, and effective daily operation of assigned areas. Judgement must be exercised to alleviate pain or suffering by the animals. - Provision of the necessary elements to make the animal's environment as enriched and comfortable as possible.
- The facility manager oversees work; incorrect decisions could result in deterioration of animal health and/or disruption or ruination of a research study.

Supervision Received
Direct consultation with the facility manager, necessary when unusual circumstances, deviations from established policy or procedures occur.

Position supervises technicians, investigators, faculty, and students.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to Registered Veterinary Technology or a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, or related discipline, and five 5 years of experience in a related field. Registered Laboratory Animal Technician RLAT registration is required.
