The course will cover forms of communication used to discuss and share environmental topics today, including print and digital media. There will be specific emphasis on different audiences and outlet types, as well as how to pitch and produce relevant content for each. The chosen instructor will need to be sufficiently familiar with journalism and media relations to impart knowledge about technical skills that students will need to succeed in this course. Students will be encouraged to pursue environmental subjects that are relevant and personally intriguing. As such, the candidate must have a wide knowledge of environmental topics and feel comfortable expanding their awareness to support each student's interests. A background in environmental studies and communication media, whether academically or professionally, will be ideal to ensure that the course provides realistic connections and skills for students entering the field of science communication.
The successful candidate should expect to spend some time before the official course start date in preparation, during the term overseeing course TAs and markers, plus marking assignments and conducting course wrap-up after the end of term. During the course delivery, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in both the lectures and selected tutorials.
A degree in a field related to environmental studies, with some emphasis on climatechange, environmental policy and ethics, sustainability theory, resource management,ecology and biodiversity, or other relevant abiotic/biotic factors.
Demonstrated evidence of teaching problem-based learning concepts to interdisciplinary students with varied backgrounds and experiences.
Expertise in interdisciplinary learning and teaching sustainability knowledge and competencies to undergraduate and graduate students.
Demonstrated experience in the field of environmental journalism and communication. Diverse experience with forms of media, whether digital (audio, social media, graphic design, etc.) or print (newspaper, books, magazines, etc.), is preferred.
Demonstrated competency in both virtual (Zoom and Teams) and in-person teaching.
Evidence of successful integration of accessibility/UDL principles into previous teaching.
Ability to work with colleagues collaboratively and constructively.
Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
Proficiency with Dalhousie's learning management system (Brightspace) is considered essential.
