Summary: The City of Ottawa seeks a Survey Technician to join the Surveys and Mapping unit, providing corporate legal survey and mapping services in support of the City's planning, development and infrastructure operations.

The Surveys and Mapping unit provides corporate legal survey and mapping services in support of the City's planning, development and infrastructure operations. As a Survey Technician, you will function as a member of a survey crew and assist Survey Technologists in the collection of Topographic and Legal Survey information in the field.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect Topographic and Legal Survey information in the field
  • Assist Survey Technologists in survey operations
  • Operate GPS equipment, electronic total station equipment, and conventional rod and level equipment
  • Read and interpret legal survey plans and base mapping products
  • Document observations in a clear and concise manner
  • Ensure that fieldwork meets legislative requirements and that the Surveys and Mapping Branch procedural guide is followed
Requirements
  • Completion of a 2-year diploma in surveying from an accredited college or institution
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in either Engineering or Legal surveying
  • Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Land Registration System, 3° MTM and 6° UTM Coordinate System, and provincial statutes relating to surveying
  • Ability to operate a computer to assist in data downloading and to read and interpret legal survey plans and base mapping products

  • Courteous and informative character when dealing with City staff and public
  • Must demonstrate initiative and responsibility

  • Ensures that electronic data is stored in a correct manner
  • Performs routine equipment tests on a regular basis
  • Operates City vehicles safely and performs daily maintenance checks
  • Effective interpersonal relationships

  • Physically capable

  • Driver's License Requirement: Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
