ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), led by Dalhousie University and in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland, is one of the world's most significant ocean science research collaborations, serving as an international hub for ocean science research with a focus on achieving net zero, sustaining bioresources, and protecting biodiversity. The OFI currently manages five key research and training projects: Safe and Sustainable Development of the Ocean Frontier, and Transforming Climate Action, both funded through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund program; Ocean School; Centre of Excellence in Observational Oceanography, and the proposed North Atlantic Carbon Observatory.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the OFI Scientific Director at Dalhousie with oversight from the Scientific Directorate in partnership with Memorial University, the Program Developer, Ocean Biodiversity and Bioresources will play a pivotal role in developing and securing funding for expansive research programs within OFI to protect ocean biodiversity and sustain ocean bioresources, with the overarching goals of identifying frontier priority areas, establishing global partnerships, and securing grants to advance cutting-edge research initiatives. The Program Developer, Ocean Biodiversity and Bioresources will work in tandem with the project leads at the partner institutions, and with the OFI executive team and OFI-affiliated researchers to develop and execute a comprehensive strategy to launch and build each research program, fostering a culture of research excellence, collaboration, and innovation.

  • Work collaboratively with partner institutions' project leads and OFI-affiliated researchers to align program objectives with the Institute's mission and goals.
  • Facilitate workshops with researchers and international scholars to ensure a comprehensive and innovative approach to identifying the research focus areas; and conduct in-depth assessments and literature reviews to identify frontier priority areas within ocean bioresources and biodiversity.
  • Identify and engage with key stakeholders, including global industry leaders, government agencies, and international research organizations to identify frontier research goals and opportunities; and foster collaborative partnerships to enhance the impact and reach of the research programs, ensuring alignment with OFI's vision.
  • Represent OFI at domestic and international conferences, forums, and meetings to strengthen global partnerships and stay informed about the latest developments in the sector.
  • Research and identify relevant grant opportunities from government agencies, foundations, and private-sector organizations to fund ambitious, multi-year, multi-university programs, working closely with OFI's Director of Partnerships; and develop compelling grant proposals in collaboration with the OFI research and administrative team, showcasing the potential for groundbreaking scientific contributions.
