About the roleAbout our team

The Engineering Programs and Operations team supports the Engineering discipline in a broad range of ways, working closely with our discipline leaders. Our goal is to help Shopify have the best possible Engineering team through such varied programs as:

  • Early Talent (Dev Degree and Engineering Internships)
  • Engineering Culture: using various events and delivery mechanisms to promote the right behaviors and approaches to work within our Engineering organization, such as Hack Days, Speaker Series, Dev Digest, Codex and more
  • Engineering Assembler work: collaborating with Talent and Talent Acquisition to inform and execute internal movements, prioritize our needs and the allocations of external candidates, with the goal of constantly increasing talent density. This collaboration also extends to the development of tools and processes to improve the collaborative work between Talent Acquisition and Engineering
  • Engineering Health: surfacing the data allowing Engineering Leadership to properly assess the state of the discipline, and executing action items that result from this
  • Driving the management of our Open Source Software collaborations, as well as our the sponsorship of external events related to the Engineering discipline
  • Providing Program Management support for work that spans across multiple Groups without requiring the technical expertise of a Technical Program Management (BFCM, Editions,...)

Job Description

A Program Manager on the Engineering Programs and Operations team will have the opportunity to work on a broad range of challenges, including the ones above (with the exception of Early Talent, which has its own dedicated team). Collaborating closely with numerous Engineering leaders, including members of the senior leadership team, they each own a portfolio of programs large and small that they drive to successful conclusion, usually by teaming up with other members of our team, or partners from across the company. They most often work with Engineering, other members of the Operations discipline, Communications,Talent Acquisition, Talent, etc.

Because of the frequent interactions with our senior leaders and the high impact and high profile of the different programs we run, we are looking for a seasoned Program Manager who displays a high level of autonomy and ownership, a proven ability to collaborate with a broad range of teams, stakeholders of various disciplines, and strong planning, management, and communications skills. They will need to be comfortable working in a fast paced environment where handling multiple programs at a time and frequent context switching are the norm. And because they'll be called on to drive all aspects of the program's development and delivery, we're looking for a self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit who's excited by seeing an idea through to successful execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create plans, frameworks and communications that result in successful program design and execution.
  • Define measurable deliverables that help you and the team assess progress and pivot when necessary.
  • Develop and maintain high standards for the programs.
  • Immerse yourself in self-directed learning to obtain a broader understanding of your goals in order to clearly articulate how your programs align with the broader company mission.
  • Work cross-functionally with Engineering senior leadership, Talent Acquisition and Talent team members, and other key stakeholders to build and deliver the best programs possible.
  • Proactively identify and propose new areas for the development or improvement of various programs, constantly looking for ways to improve our Engineering organization.
  • Champion a better, faster, and simpler way of doing things.
  • Build and develop relationships with key stakeholders to improve efficiency, and effectiveness.
