Job Summary

The position will be involved in a Genome BC-financed project ("PeptAID - Antimicrobial Peptides to Replace Antibiotics in Farm Veterinary Practice") developing novel anti-microbial peptides to be used in poultry operations to replace now-banned antibiotics as routine practice in commercial poultry operations. Duties include designing data collection, validation and cost benefit analysis of data to determine applicability.

Organizational Status
The PeptAID Research Assistant will work independently with poultry industry professionals such as veterinarians who are knowledgeable about these matters, some of whom are being employed as part of this larger project.

Work Performed

  • Designs, modifies and validates data collection on poultry farm operations to determine initially the set of activities that are followed to deal with anti-microbial issues without the use of antibiotics. Validation of data is paramount as the RA needs to ensure data is consistent with the rest of the data of the farm and that the responses are credible. This requires expertise and independent judgement in analyzing and interpreting the data and then adapting the methods of data collection on the fly. This will allow collection of costs and returns that focus on the animal health and anti-microbial part of the farm operation.
  • Develops and finalizes a questionnaire to be used to derive consensus estimates of the costs and returns described above, and possibly to interview farmers to gain independent estimates of those costs and returns. This includes troubleshooting data collection protocols and subsequent modification.
  • Measures and analyzes the costs and benefits of these activities, all for a baseline case of operating without antibiotics and without the novel AMPs that are being developed by this project.
  • Conducts complex economic analysis and interpretation in order to determine applicability - if the novel AMPs will be profitable to the farm operation by comparing to the baseline case.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The work will require judgement for which the persons are trained and chosen. It will derive from the functions and detailed work activities noted above, and all this under the supervision of R Barichello. The judgment is primarily that the data being collected is communicated correctly and is accurately interpreted and assessed, complex work for collecting economic data at an enterprise level. While in the field oversees data collection. Poor judgement will result in flawed data, jeopardizing the research project. Tact and discretion are required as inappropriate interactions with the community/industry stakeholders will negatively impact the reputation of the project, the PI, the Research Project, Program, Faculty and the University.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
