Your role

Are you a creative, dynamic and people-focused senior journalist looking for a new leadership challenge in a busy, daily newsroom?

CBC Edmonton is looking for an executive producer of programming and engagement.

Reporting to the director of journalism and programming, the executive producer will lead our teams who produce current affairs programming, podcasts and special projects, work closely with our communications department to connect with and grow our audiences in Edmonton and northern Alberta, and coordinate our staff development and engagement initiatives to foster an inclusive and collaborative work culture.

In this role you will work alongside the executive producer of news to steer our programs and our people into an increasingly digital future and help us reach a whole new generation of Albertans.

As such, we are looking for someone who is a champion both of great journalistic content and of the people behind it. Could this be you?

As a programmer, you're innovative and adaptive, and you inspire others to experiment and take risks. You are a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of your decision-making, ensuring our programming connects our audiences to the news they need to know, the stories that affect their lives and the issues that resonate in their communities.

You strive to broaden the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected in programming, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. You are adept at engaging with audiences and connecting with the community, looking for new ways to reach people where they are. You are comfortable listening to and engaging with people who have different viewpoints, and welcome opportunities to challenge the status quo and confront bias.

As a leader, you are naturally collaborative, skilled at navigating conflict and change, breaking down silos and championing team success. You are a mentor at heart, and are deeply invested in developing a representative and inclusive culture. You will oversee staff development, training opportunities and scheduling, so organizational skills and an eye for talent are key.

Ideally, you bring a different life experience, perspective and expertise to our newsroom team, all of which will enrich our content and help our programs grow new, younger and more diverse audiences across broadcast and digital platforms.

Your responsibilities:
  • Alongside the executive producer of news, oversee CBC Edmonton's daily operations, focusing on current affairs programs (Edmonton AM, Radio Active, Our Edmonton), podcasts and programming on emerging platforms.
  • Provide editorial oversight to program producers to ensure our content is original, relevant and impactful, and meets our journalistic standards.
  • Lead staff in strategic planning and programming reviews to ensure our programs resonate with audiences in a continuously changing media environment.
  • Monitor audience and industry trends, and develop ideas and approaches for future opportunities.
  • Coordinate and oversee live and breaking news specials.
  • Oversee staffing and scheduling decisions for programming teams.
  • Collaborate with communications teams to deepen our connections with communities in Edmonton and northern Alberta through programming, outreach and stakeholder sessions.
  • Identify and develop emerging talent within and outside CBC Edmonton, and actively support efforts to improve the recruitment of candidates from underrepresented groups.
  • Coordinate training and development opportunities for all newsroom staff, providing coaching, mentoring and opportunities for growth.
  • Develop, coordinate and track the progress of staff engagement and inclusion initiatives.
Your profile:
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams in a fast-paced daily multi-platform news environment.
  • Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • A strategic thinker with a proven track record of executing on a vision.
  • An experienced programmer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production, and the ability to develop and evaluate programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long-term planning.
  • A high-energy leader with a positive, team-first attitude and the ability to motivate and coach teams, encourage creativity and embrace experimentation.
  • Demonstrated skills in talent recognition, development and retention.
  • Experience and commitment to developing content strategies to feature new voices and perspectives and to connect with new, younger and more diverse audiences.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Edmonton and northern Alberta, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
  • Strong people management skills with a keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • Possession of a valid driver's licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of seven years of journalism experience.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
