We are seeking a Rehabilitation Assistant to join our team at Burnaby Hospital, working under the direction of a professional nurse and in cooperation with the interprofessional care team.

The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Highlights of the two-phase redevelopment project include:

  • Expanded Emergency Department with additional treatment spaces
  • New health care pavilion with 83 beds to support maternity, neonatal intensive care, medicine and mental health patients
  • New operating rooms, procedure rooms and recovery spaces
  • New acute care tower with 160 beds
  • New medical imaging department
  • New integrated BC Cancer Centre

The Rehabilitation Assistant will work under the direction of a professional nurse and in cooperation with the interprofessional care team, implementing treatment plans and assisting in monitoring patient progress.

Responsibilities:
  1. Carries out designated components of a rehabilitative treatment plan under an assignment of task by a physiotherapist or occupational therapist
  2. Observes and reports to appropriate team member cognitive and functional changes in patient ability or behaviour
  3. Provides input into the planning, implementation, modification, and evaluation of the treatment plan
  4. Performs various tests as assigned by PT or OT, such as Berg Balance, Timed Up and Go (TUG), and six-minute walk test
  5. Prepares and applies therapeutic treatment modalities as assigned by PT or OT
  6. Provides functional skills training to patients and families in activities of daily living, mobility and communication
  7. Assists PT or OT in the fabrication and modifications of splints, seating and exercise devices, mobility and assistive devices
  8. Maintains therapy equipment and supplies
Qualifications:
  • Completion of a Rehabilitation Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to deal with others effectively
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to organize work
  • Ability to operate related equipment
