As a Marine Charterer, you will have responsibility for marine chartering activities as well as leading strategic projects in the marine chartering space. Your goal will be to engage in chartering of crude vessels, including Suezmax, Aframax and VLCCs, as well as clean and black oil vessels and barges as required to support the business needs. You will also focus on successful chartering at current market conditions to ensure safe and optimal transportation costs per barrel (Bbl) to the company. In addition, you will use strong analytical and supply management skills to develop proof of concept proposals including modelling to support decisions on vessel replacements and other strategic initiatives. During the course of a year, Irving Oil will utilize chartered ships to transport approximately 500 refined product and crude cargoes. Your success will be to help provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective marine movement of products.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Manage the chartering function to ensure adequate and appropriate vessels are chartered to meet the company's operating and safety requirements.
  • Negotiate chartering terms consistent with internal standards and market conditions. Provide input into strategies on Charter Party terms development, create and evaluate strategies on contract of affreightment to meet vessel requirements.
  • Coordinate with marine operations to ensure the relevant charterparty terms and conditions and/or voyage specifics are understood for accuracy and timing of instructions to both chartered in vessels and company relets.
  • In coordination with marine operations, ensure the assessment and claims review from owners/brokers for demurrage, detention, and deviations from within the charter party is completed in a timely manner to negotiate prompt settlements. Lead negotiation and resolution directly with Owners as required.
  • Provide recommendations, planning to maximize fleet revenue and profits on chartered vessels.
  • Perform day-to-day chartering activities for associated vessels on either time or spot charter. These activities include but not limited to coordinating delivery and redelivery notices, invoice approvals, reviewing and negotiating post fixtures requests from Owners, managing Owners to the terms of the charterparty.
  • Perform constant review of market conditions, evaluation and recommendation of candidate ships and barges from an operational and financial standpoint and negotiation of the charter conditions with owners, operators, and brokers.
  • Build and foster relationships with both ship owners and brokers, always ensuring a full understanding of the Irving Values.
  • Communicate regularly with various teams, including product traders, production planning and marine operations ensuring clear alignment on chartering requirements and strategies.
  • Prepare and communicate market updates to all stakeholder groups. This may include views to rates, availabilities and changes in market dynamics.
  • Compile and present monthly, quarterly, and yearly KPIs, and performance data.
  • Lead analysis, evaluation on the Vessel Replacement program including the search for suitable replacement vessels.
  • Lead new GHG emission evaluation and understanding/recommendations for our Marine program.
  • Review and update chartering procedures as required.
  • Lead Stewardship programs with Vessel Owners for time chartered vessels.
  • Complete financial freight projections and analysis.
  • Become a Subject matter expert on Maritime rules and regulations and remain informed on new regulations.
  • Support vessel vetting, terminal vetting and auditing including procedure review and updating.
  • Lead bunkering operations and bunker claim processes

Your Skills:

  • Must have strong communication and relationship skills with high collaboration and engagement skills

  • Analytical Skills – must have the ability to complete detailed and complex financial and project analysis

Your Experience:

  • Knowledge of Maritime Law, chartering terms and conditions and its implications
  • Experience in tanker ship chartering
  • Experience in tanker vessel operations to include, but not limited to, understanding tank segregations and pipe line layouts
  • Solid commercial knowledge and understanding of the shipping industry
  • Advanced experience in negotiation of contracts
  • A minimum of 10 years of industry specific experience
