Job Description:

The Interpretive Team aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the ecological and cultural history of Banff National Park in our visitors. We do so by offering guided interpretive hikes, delivering educational and inspiring presentations, and more

Our interpretive staff are either Interpretive Guides or Interpreters, depending on certifications and experience, and their roles are outlined in the Job Responsibilities below. Please indicate which position you are applying for in your application.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Guide half-day and full-day hikes (Interpretive Guides only).
  • Present educational talks and activities.
  • Deliver key messages from Parks Canada's mandate through meaningful, enthusiastic, and enjoyable interpretation.
  • Greet and answer visitors' questions, and assist them as required.
  • Monitor wildlife activity and weather at the top of the summer gondola to ensure a safe environment for staff and visitors, including checking the bear fence, assisting with weather-related gondola closures, and educating visitors about wildlife safety.
  • Complete reservations for programs and sell retail items, including registration, payment, and daily cash out.
  • Drive courtesy shuttle and assist with lift evacuations and emergency transportation.
  • Provide first aid as required, including completing all required paperwork.
  • General cleaning and maintenance of the Wildlife Centre, Guides' Cabin, and their surroundings, such as picking up litter and cleaning washrooms.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

Interpreter:

  • Basic Knowledge (Banff) course or higher through the Interpretive Guides Association (IGA). Visit for more details.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification (16hrs). Wilderness First Aid / CPR is considered an asset.

Interpretive Guide:

  • Candidate must already hold or complete prior to their contract's start date either:
    • 3-Season Group Management course (or Parks Canada approved equivalent) and Apprentice Interpreter course through the Interpretive Guides Association (IGA). Visit for more details.

OR

  • Apprentice Hiking Guide certification through the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) and IGA Basic Knowledge course. For more details, visit and
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification (16hrs). Wilderness First Aid / CPR is preferred.
  • Preference may be given to higher levels of certification, such as IGA Professional Interpreter and ACMG Hiking Guide.

Interpreter and Guide:

  • Previous interpretation, educational, or instructional experience. Formal education, training and experience in the areas of guiding, education, or the environment considered an asset.
  • Comfortable public speaking to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to organize and maintain control over large groups.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbally and written.
  • Shows initiative, is self-motivated, and is a respectful team player.
  • Interacts with guests and fellow staff sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
  • Responds quickly and calmly in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • Able to spend multiple hours working outside in all weather conditions.
  • Fluency or working knowledge of other languages is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 or higher Alberta Driver's license (or equivalent) with clean driving record and recent 3-years of claims-free insurance history (abstract/traffic history report and proof of 3-years of insurance coverage must be provided before commencement of employment).

Work Schedule:

5 days on/2 days off, with possibly of 4 days on/3 days off mid-season
