Major Responsibilities:

Supports the Parks, Forestry and Recreation Engagement Team in engaging the public on capital projects by:

  • Initiates the planning and organizing of virtual and in-person public meetings, workshops and open houses, including through the provision of tech and facilitation support and the set-up and take-down of equipment and materials.
  • Initiates, plans, organizes and facilitates meetings that can include the public, senior staff, consultants and Toronto Councillors.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and maintains documents and materials related to public engagement events (e.g. preparation of presentation materials for public meetings and events, development of surveys, and preparation of minutes and records of public meetings and workshops), and ensures provincially mandated requirements are met (i.e. the development AODA-compliant summary reports on engagement outcomes)
  • Responds to telephone and email inquiries and correspondence from the public, elected officials and staff.
  • Trains staff on presentation strategies and alerts senior staff about the public's concerns.
  • Drafts public reports summarizing public consultation outcomes.
  • Interacts with divisional staff, other city divisions as well as Toronto Councillors on issues related to projects.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Post-Secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function (i.e. social science, political science, environment or planning, sociology, urban studies, environmental studies, geography, or planning) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Experience conducting public consultation projects and activities.
  3. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Outlook) and InDesign or Adobe Illustrator.

You must also have:

  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of public consultation and consensus building techniques and practices.
  • Excellent understanding, knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of knowledge, temperament, languages, literacy levels, culture and ethno-racial background in communities throughout Toronto.
  • Ability to research, write and edit communications materials and other creative content for newsletters, flyers and letters, and developing copy for project webpages and social media posts
  • Knowledge of the local geography, political structure and physical structure of Toronto communities.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to interpret technical information into a written form that is understandable by the general public.
  • Knowledge of social media tools and trends and ability to use social media for public consultation and information purposes.
  • Good public speaking skills including the ability to speak with knowledge and assurance in front of an audience.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to load/unload and set up materials and equipment for public events using a corporate vehicle.
  • Must be able to work evening and weekends, as required and travel between locations.
