- Process physicians' written orders; flag charts for RN to check.
- Compile charts and Kardex on admission; prepare and complete necessary documentation for admission of surgical patients, discharges, transfer or death of a patient.
- Maintain departmental timekeeping; enter payroll data into computer; print reports for the manager; make adjustments as required.
- Answer telephone, take and relay messages, answer routine inquiries or refer as appropriate; open and distribute mail, faxes, etc.
- Act as a receptionist; greet and direct visitors and patients.
- Orient new staff and students to unit; demonstrate procedures, answer questions and explain unit organization and layout.
- Pick up and sign for narcotics as required.
- Maintain stationary and supply levels for unit; monitor stock, prepare requisition for reorder.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Grade 12, completion of a Unit Clerk Program plus one (1) year's recent, related experience as a unit clerk in an acute facility or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Ability to type at 40 w.p.m.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and organize workload.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to operate a computer and related equipment.
