What can I expect to do in this role?In this role you will :

  • Conduct objective, fair, thorough, unbiased and timely investigations into matters within the jurisdiction of the PSISB as provided for in the PSISA and the Associated Regulations.
  • Receive assignment and direction from the Registrar or Deputy Registrar to conduct and manage investigations and manage investigations independently, completely and accurately by applying the PSISA and using established investigation techniques/methods.
  • Develop and provide written and oral briefings/presentations on contentious/ high-profile issues.
  • Assess the scope and determine the methodology needed to carry out an efficient investigation.
  • Coordinate the list of people to be interviewed and interview both civilian witnesses and police witnesses.
  • Gather and analyze evidence in accordance with the prescribed Rules of Evidence and the law.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports of investigations and make recommendations.
  • Liaise with police services, Ministry Corporate areas and other governments, ministries and agencies to undertake investigations.
**The position will be required to work extended and irregular hours with minimal or no notice. There will be requirements for extended travel (sometimes on short notice) through the province including remote areas.

How do I qualify?Mandatory

  • You have the ability to obtain and maintain Provincial Offences Officer status.
Knowledge and ExperienceYou have:

  • Thorough knowledge and practical experience in specialized investigative techniques, procedures, legislation and courtroom procedures to carry out investigations by gathering and interpreting evidence and making recommendations for follow-up (example: Criminal charges).
  • Thorough knowledge of the Private Security and Investigative Services Act and associated Regulations, the Criminal Code of Canada to both gather and interpret evidence during investigations and ensure continuity of evidence.
  • Working knowledge of the Canada Evidence Act to identify and explain evidence as necessary to support charges and cases.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply basic theories to gather evidence and interpret findings by examining available evidence, identifying potential tests for proving theories and providing testimony in Court.
Analytical and Evaluation SkillsYou have:

  • Experience in conducting investigations, assessing and interpreting evidence, maintaining the integrity of the investigative file, and making recommendations to the Registrar or Deputy Registrar.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify and assess trends and patterns requiring further investigation and the ability to report on trends and feed into strategic enforcement plans.
  • Experience in meeting priorities and operational requirements working with a high volume of files and dealing with sensitive issues.
Tact, Communication and Interpersonal SkillsYou have:

  • Experience in explaining and discussing interpretations of evidence and related legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines, and theories about the investigation, using appropriate judgement in communicating confidential and sensitive information, and providing testimony in Court as necessary.
  • Ability to deliver briefings, presentations, lectures, seminars and attend meetings.
  • Exceptional writing skills to prepare materials, Crown Briefs and reports and the ability to generate statistics on enforcement activities.
  • Ability to engage stakeholders to increase compliance with established methods, models and concepts of investigation and undertake appropriate follow up/enforcement as required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to enable discussion among agencies involved in an investigation and reconcile differing interpretations of evidence and views.
  • High level of tact and discretion when dealing with highly sensitive information and evidence.
  • Experience working with law enforcement and regulatory agencies to plan, implement and evaluate enforcement strategies and activities.
Computer skillsYou have:

  • Demonstrated experience in using Microsoft Office programs to develop briefings, create reports, presentations, review materials and create documents to organize your work.
  • Experience in using the internet/social media for job-related searches and to gather information.
  • Ability to effectively use email for work-related communication.
