This position provides an essential service to facilitate safe operation of CANDU licensed facilities. The successful candidate will be expected to lead a team of RP surveyors in SP3 to meet CANDU's business objectives/customer requirements, and to ensure that this function is performed efficiently, within all applicable regulatory and RP program requirements. This position reports functionally to the Radiation Protection (RP) Manager.

Your role within the team:

  • Maintain a good knowledge of the RP program and procedures at CANDU Energy.
  • Maintain a good knowledge of all instruments used by Radiation Surveyors in the course of their work.
  • Conduct in formal and on-the-job training, as required.
  • Liaise with all work groups to effectively plan control of radiological work in SP3.
  • Through leadership of the team of RP surveyors, ensure the following is conducted as required to support project work in SP3:
  • Perform radiation surveys as requested by supervisors, including daily routine radiation surveys.
  • Post and mark radiation signage and zones as required by procedures.
  • Perform loose and fixed contamination checks on personnel (exit procedures from radiation zones) and equipment or facilities.
  • Perform basic hazard assessments, review and approve work permits for RP requirements.
  • Exercise judgement verifying procedural compliance and in offering advice on RP or contamination control questions as they arise in daily activities.
  • Inform immediate supervision of any unusual conditions or actions impacting RP.
  • Be conscious of the interaction between radiation control measures and their effects on production and schedule responsibilities.
  • Recognize and appropriately respond to abnormal situations to ensure personnel safety is maintained.
  • Maintain proper documentation in records and daily logs.
  • Establish excellent communication and develop internal relationships with CANDU staff.
  • Perform duties under varying degrees of supervision, including overtime, shift work, or irregular hours.
  • Establish and maintain an excellent business relationship with project and line management, external industry peers and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)

The ideal candidate:

  • Graduate from a recognized institute of advanced technology or equivalent formal education in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 10 years of related work experience in radiation protection preferably with knowledge of CANDU tool refurbishment.
  • Ability to improve, deal with and accurately respond and report on rapidly changing conditions.
  • Ability to oversee teams and maintain strong cooperation with co-workers.
  • Ability to liaise with management, supervisors, surveyors, customers and regulatory agencies using tact and good judgement.
  • Thoroughly accurate, conscientious and possess excellent judgement.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and good record maintenance skills.
  • Physically capable of lifting, handling, etc., various items on a regular basis.
  • Must be willing and physically able to wear respiratory protection and protective clothing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, to produce high quality applications and documentation for submissions.
  • Must be designated as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) or willing to be designated as a NEW
