Join us on an exciting project and make history. The Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment is a multi-year, multi-phase project to increase the hospital's capacity, beds and services.
RCH first opened in 1862, it is a vital referral centre and regional centre of excellence for trauma, critical care, cardiac care, maternity, neonatal intensive care and neurosurgery. When the full redevelopment is complete, the people of British Columbia will have increased access to cardiac, trauma, mental health, maternity and NICU services and beds.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Regular Full-time Instrumentation & Controls Technician at Royal Columbia Hospital located in New Westminster, British Columbia
We are looking for applicants with;
- Graduate of a recognized program in electronic technology
- Industry and vendor equipment certifications as required
- Five (5) years recent related experience
- Or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Detailed OverviewPositions at this level design and build electronic circuits, design and implement solutions to issues and problems and perform fault analyses. Develop and maintain complex computer control systems for the building automation system pertaining to: heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Performs skilled work in the installation, alteration, troubleshooting, maintenance, service and repair of electronic equipment and systems. Understands, operates and modifies computer software for electronic equipment/systems and building automation systems. All work performed on electronic equipment and systems is done in accordance with, where applicable, bylaws regulations, codes and standards.
Responsibilities
- Designs and builds electronic circuits by acquiring parts, assembling components and wiring equipment; installs, tests adjusts and commissions the modification; generates appropriate drawings and documentation.
- Tests, identifies faults, calibrates and repairs computerized hardware, solid state logic boards and related equipment of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system.
- Designs and implements solutions to issues and problems by reviewing work requests and consulting with user departments regarding specifications and other project requirements; interprets existing or prepares new sketches, diagrams or schematic drawings in order to determine the sequence of operations, the project's scope and required materials and equipment; calculates materials and labour in estimating the cost of projects and makes recommendations as required; maintains systems to ensure optimal performance.
- Carries out preventative maintenance on all electronic components of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system by cleaning, testing, calibrating and replacing parts as required; maintains appropriate documentation.
- Liaises with manufacturers and suppliers to determine the availability and cost of systems/parts. Where required, obtains guidance on their installation and use; assess factors such as condition, age and functionality in order to determine repair, modification or replacement; prepares for work project by performing operational and safety risk assessments; arranges work schedules with user departments and assembles supplies, tools and equipment.
- Modifies existing computer applications by, for example, inputting instructions, making adjustments to data bases and/or programs.
- Evaluates computerized hardware and related equipment of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system for technical acceptance to ensure conformance with specifications, correcting faults where necessary.
- Investigates and solves user-complaints, as identified by engineers, in the maintenance and repair of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system.
- Instructs staff in the operation of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system.
- Tests, identifies faults, calibrates and repairs pneumatic instrumentation associated with steam boilers.
- Provides technical support to staff to resolve problems with electronic systems by analyzing, testing and repairing electronic components.
- Liaises with outside contractors to ensure adherence to contract specifications and facility requirements.
- Maintains an inventory and recommends purchases of supplies, equipment and tools; completes related reports and records.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Graduate of a recognized program in electronic technology plus five (5) years recent field experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Industry and vendor equipment certifications as required.
