Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Restoration Field Assistant to join our team at Conservation Halton. As a key member of our Landscape Restoration team, you will be responsible for implementing terrestrial and aquatic rehabilitation projects, communicating with landowners and watershed residents, and monitoring results post-rehabilitation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the planning, implementation, and reporting of restoration projects focusing on terrestrial, wetland, and riparian ecosystems.
  • Implement tree planting projects, including site preparation and invasive species management.
  • Assist with operation and maintenance of equipment, including planting implements and vegetation trimmers.
  • Conduct habitat and vegetation inventories to aid in restoration planning.
  • Installation of aquatic restoration structures, such as sediment mats and log deflectors.
  • Conduct pre- and post-restoration monitoring.
  • Follow planting plans, complete daily planter reports, and assist with data entry for restoration project statistics and monitoring.
  • Support outreach initiatives for restoration projects, including cold calls and site visits.
  • Represent Conservation Halton at community outreach events.
Requirements
  • Working towards or completed a university degree or college diploma in ecosystem restoration, biology, ecology, geography, or fish and wildlife management.
  • Minimum six (6) months related work experience.
  • Knowledge of local ecosystems.
  • A basic understanding of native and invasive herbaceous species.
  • Introductory experience implementing rehabilitation projects that involve bioengineering, especially in aquatic/riparian environments.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • Experience completing repetitive and strenuous physical activities related to tree, shrub, and herbaceous planting and installation of habitat structures.
  • Comfortable working in chest waders and in and around water.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Efficient problem-solving, multi-tasking, and creative thinking skills.
