Reporting directly to Kristin Cochrane, the Chief Executive Officer of Penguin Random House Canada, the publisher has responsibility for the continued creative and financial success of Penguin Canada. In addition to leading Penguin Canada and its strong team of editors, the publisher is a member of the company's leadership team, representing Penguin Canada's interests, contributing to our overall community, and prioritizing an inclusive and high-performance culture.

What we're looking for:

  • Deep leadership experience establishing a shared vision for a commercially successful endeavour with creativity at its centre; experience managing, developing, and supporting a talented team.
  • An inclusive approach to leadership, a proven ability to collaborate and lead people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds, and experience supporting the advancement of inclusion in all aspects of your work, including content; enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus.
  • Excellent business acumen and commercial understanding defined by extensive retail and consumer market knowledge; ability to set and deliver results against ambitious goals.
  • Experience with significant P&L responsibility.
  • A dynamic leader with an ability to shift gears comfortably, recover quickly, navigate ambiguity, and make clear decisions aligned with overall local and global company strategy and vision.
  • Exceptionally organized with experience managing multiple complex projects to budget and on tight deadlines and ability to set clear priorities.
  • Creative and curious with a deep love of reading across a wide range of interests and a dedicated commitment to the ideas and voices that shape our world.
  • Interpersonally savvy with a proven ability to work across all organizational levels and develop strong, enduring relationships with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders, with our author community, and with agents here and globally.
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills with proven ability to negotiate at high levels.

What you'll do:

  • Set a clear strategic vision and implement goals with a growth mindset for Penguin Canada and a view to its ongoing success.
  • Collaborate with internal partners in sales, marketing and publicity, finance, and consumer insights to track and measure results and follow the trends and data that fuel long-term planning.
  • Identify both short- and long-term objectives and market opportunities and work with a team of talented editors to develop projects to meet them.
  • Determine and advise on acquisition strategy within the division and manage financial expectations for each book.
  • Oversee all aspects of Penguin Canada's business, continuously communicate and collaborate with colleagues in all teams at the company including sales, contracts, marketing and publicity, legal, and finance to ensure the best result for our authors and their books from the point of acquisition to each title's forever life in backlist.
  • Lead, coach, support, inspire, and develop a talented editorial team.
  • Manage relationships across the large community of writers, agents, and colleagues and partners in Canada and globally.
  • Further the diversity, equity, and inclusion goals of the company to better serve Canada's increasingly diverse population of readers and continue to prioritize strengthening our culture of inclusion and belonging.
  • Contribute actively to the shared leadership of Penguin Random House Canada.

The salary range for this position begins at $122,000. Compensation is competitive and in line with Penguin Random House Canada's industry-leading compensation program.
