Job Summary
The primary focus of this position will be to provide research analysis for the research team and program manager. The research team focuses on a number of global health initiatives in newborn and child health coordinated centrally from the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics. The research assistant will work with a multi-disciplinary team by leading various tasks including the drafting of various project documents, inputting, coding and analysis of quantitative data from multiple global health research and precision medicine projects, and developing written literature reviews and reports.

Organizational Status

The co-ordinating centre is located in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics on-site at the Children and Women's Health Centre of British Columbia. The Research Assistant will assist the Program Manager and PI with the activities of the research portfolio.

The Research Technician will be supervised by and report to the Program Manager. The successful candidate will work with the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators, Program Manager, and research staff on related studies, and other clerical and administrative staff members.

Work Performed

The Research Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Search, retrieve and analyze research instruments specific for data collection for precision medicine based approaches in maternal, neonatal and child health, Support research ethics board submissions and protocol registration processes
  • Create and format surveys in both online and paper formats
  • Draft consent forms, recruitment scripts and other project documents
  • Demonstrate leadership in implementing study protocols
  • Support the development and implementation of systems for cleaning, management, and maintenance of longitudinal qualitative and quantitative datasets, to include data analysis as needed
  • Collect, input, code, and analyze quantitative data from study sites
  • Troubleshoot complex problems inherent to data collection and analysis of multi-site global health projects
  • Participate in research team meetings and contribute to the interpretation and analysis of literature and research data, as required
  • Undertake literature search and retrieval as necessary
  • Develop written reviews of literature needed to support specific projects
  • Contribute to the preparation of various reports and support the development of academic papers, policy papers, press releases, presentations, and ethics and grant applications
  • Format for publications, including updating and maintaining Reference Manager
  • other related duties as required to support this research program

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Project Manager and/or Principal Investigator will monitor the work of the incumbent. Errors or incorrect decisions could potentially result in delays in completing the project or seriously compromise the quality of the research. In addition, if established protocols related to privacy, confidentiality, and safety are not followed confidentiality about sensitive information related to patients' personal health and experiences could be breached..

Supervision Received
The Research Assistant will work under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions on unusual or complex problems, and exercising a considerable amount of autonomy, discretion, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods. This position will report to and be supervised by the Project Manager and the Principal Investigators of the project. They, in conjunction with the investigative team, will provide direction to the incumbent.

Supervision Given
This position has no formal supervisory responsibility. The Research Assistant will, however, provide leadership, training and guidance, particularly related to research activities and protocols, to staff and students working on the project.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree (Graduate degree preferred) in relevant discipline or completion of a technical program and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Training in statistical methods and data analysis
  • Training and experience with software such as SPSS and Redcap experience
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Web skills (e.g. social media) would be an asset.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
