This role requires full time on site presence.

CBC North is looking for someone with a natural curiosity who loves to tell stories with rich audio, compelling visuals, and great writing. As a Reporter/Editor, your primary objective is to perform reporting and editorial assignments related to the gathering and presentation of program material for all our media platforms, audio, video, digital and social.

The North is a place some of us are fortunate enough to call home, a place of culture, tradition, heart-wrenching challenges, perseverance and innovation. The Yukon was built around stories whispered, sung, shared around the circles of campfires. As journalists and members of communities ourselves, we work to acknowledge the sweat and toil, wisdom, stumbles, tragedies, recoveries, reclamations and joy, all of which shape the social, political, economic and natural topography of the territory.

Indigenous peoples are claiming their inherent rights and asserting their power and influence. Emerging immigrant communities are planting roots. It is a territory in transition, where there's space to learn, to experience, to travel, to build and sustain a career and a life.

There will be opportunities to travel, to work on special projects and to build a career with a team that serves the North as the public broadcaster.

Your role and what you bring

You will develop and maintain contact with a variety of sources as well as work in close co-operation with your program unit. You will have demonstrated success in your role by gathering and reporting information from various sources, analyzing facts and information, drawing conclusions, and raising issues requiring further investigation. You understand the need to work with a tight deadline. You will appear regularly on air, doing live news hits, in-studio debriefs, and short documentaries. You'll be expected to contribute ideas, provide program content, write scripts for news, daily shows and for CBC North's website.

You're innovative and champion new story treatments and new workflows, and will help create a diverse range of content on our audio, video, digital and social platforms. You're not afraid to take creative risks, and you inspire others to do the same.

You will also, as required, edit material produced by others, present information and/or analysis on air in a variety of formats, and perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station. Your work will be governed by CBC's journalistic and broadcasting policy and protocols. You will help ensure our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful and relevant.

You'll experience the rush and professional fulfillment of providing people with the information and insight they rely on to navigate the world. There will also be the unglamorous grind of daily programming when the story chase is sluggish and no one seems to be answering their phones. You'll get a chance to be creative and thoughtful and to challenge yourself to produce journalism that stretches your horizons, journalism that matters to our audiences.

As the media industry and audiences continue to shift, including how people interact with us as journalists, it's a time when local news and community storytelling are more important than ever. As a candidate for this position, you'll show us your instincts and skills for finding and producing stories and for building connection and trust. You'll also be able to show us that you've already started learning about the diverse and changing population of the Yukon. You've thought about new ways to reflect all our communities in our content.

You live and promote an inclusive and respectful work culture. You're a wellspring of initiative and you also love collaborating with colleagues. You're proud and passionate and humble. The work we get to do isn't about us as individuals. It's about what we create together.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
  • A strong, demonstrated understanding of the Yukon and pan-Northern political and cultural landscape and a demonstrated aptitude to learn and listen.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Openness to new ideas and approaches
  • Initiative, flexibility, creativity and curiosity.
  • Experience with daily programing and the ability to respond to the pressures of breaking news
  • Comfort and confidence with the demands and needs of a multi-platform production hub
  • Demonstrated ability to use social media and other resources to build contacts and sources and to do outreach.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently and meet multiple deadlines on multiple platforms.
  • Strong presentation skills for broadcast and an aptitude for live reporting.
  • Experience in booking interview guests, developing lines of questioning, writing focused introductions, preparing and writing recorded audio segments.
  • Ability to interact with the public on the phone, online and in person.
  • Ability to travel within Northern Canada on assignment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and overtime, is required.
  • A post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and experience along with three years of experience relevant to journalism is during which the candidate would gain exposure to daily journalism, audio and video technology, and social media
  • Valid driver's license and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company..
Assets:
  • Experience in shooting and editing video/mobile footage. Experience in broadcast writing as well as writing for the web. Experience using iNews and Dalet (or comparable editing and scripting tools) is also an asset.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
