We are seeking an experienced Assignment Editor to coordinate the work of our journalists in Montreal and Quebec, covering regional, national, and international news stories.

As an Assignment Editor, you will be responsible for determining story angles, developing original content ideas, and providing regular feedback to field reporters. You will also consult, plan, assign, and coordinate newsgathering resources to cover the most relevant and impactful stories and events.

This is a permanent half-time position that requires working extended shifts on Saturday and Sunday. You will work in the English newsroom of CBC Montreal with our team of journalists, and you will be responsible for coordinating the work of a Research Journalist or assignment assistant, as needed.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent, five years' journalism experience, and a keen sense of the news. You will be fluent in English, have a working knowledge of French, and be able to work in a team environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Keeping up with regional, national, and international news stories through various sources.
  • Contacting media relations officers to obtain more information on press conferences or other media events.
  • Encouraging journalists to come up with their own story ideas.
  • Choosing which events will be covered during the day and drawing up the assignment schedule.
  • Attending planning meetings for day-to-day, upcoming, and special-event coverage.
  • Informing the national assignment editor of local stories having a national angle or liable to take on national importance.
  • Assigning stories to journalists and coordinating their work.
  • Assigning Camera Operators to shoots if needed.
  • Arranging Reporters', Videojournalists', and Camera Operators' schedules to meet coverage needs.
  • Coordinating the work of a Research Journalist or assignment assistant, as needed.
  • Closely following events as they unfold and being prepared to reassign journalists at any time.
  • Planning medium- and long-term assignments and creating a bank of story ideas.
  • Writing intros, as needed.
  • Occasionally setting up interviews for Reporters.
  • Ensuring that the items under your responsibility are ready on time for the various newscasts of the lineups.
  • Carrying out all other related tasks as needed.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Five years' journalism experience or equivalent.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Extensive general knowledge.
  • In-depth knowledge of current events and issues in Quebec.
  • Ability to identify the concerns of the population.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Working knowledge of French.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Keen sense of the news.
  • In-depth knowledge of newsroom logistics (TV, Radio, and Web).
  • Very good knowledge of storytelling techniques specific to each platform.
  • Knowledge of production techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of digital platforms and social media.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the day-to-day work of reporters.
  • Leadership and independence.
  • Knowledge of production applications (Dalet, iNEWS, Avid) in use at CBC/Radio-Canada.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a network of contacts.
  • Knowledge of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Selected candidates will be tested through an interview and a complete assignment.
