Located in the south-central region of B.C., the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) covers an area over 10,400 km2 and is renowned for its orchards, vineyards and golf courses, as well as its widely varied landscape including deserts, mountains and valleys, pristine lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is currently recruiting for a temporary, full-time Wildfire Mitigation Specialist to work on a contract basis.

Reporting to the Manager of Emergency Services, the Wildfire Mitigation Specialist will assist in delivering the FireSmart Home Partners Program and Community FireSmart Recognition Program to residents in the Electoral Areas of the RDOS.

The Wildfire Mitigation Specialist will work with communities to schedule education sessions and consultations with the aim of identifying hazards and making recommendations that ultimately help each community and resident become FireSmart.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Secondary school graduation or equivalent.Knowledge of wildfire, wildfire behaviour, and FireSmart Program an assetGeneral knowledge of emergency management, planning, forestry, landscaping and building construction principles is considered an asset.Experience using brush and chainsaws and other motorized equipment is considered an asset.Ability to work independently and efficiently with limited supervision.Ability to be courteous and diplomatic in dealing with the public and co-workers.Demonstrated experience in preparing and delivering public presentations and working effectively with a diverse range of stakeholder groups.Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Microsoft Teams/365).Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Strong organizational and planning skills.Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work in the presence of all types of weather conditions. Valid First Aid Certificate or an ability and willingness to obtain one.Valid BC Driver's Licence; experience towing trailers.Must be able to work Friday through Monday, ten (10) hour shifts (40 hours per week).
This temporary contract position is expected to end in December 2024 but may be extended based on available grant funding. The hourly wage for this position is $30.38 per hour plus 4% in lieu of vacation.
