Public Works Maintenance Specialist

The Public Works Department is seeking a motivated and skilled individual for the full-time permanent role of Works Maintenance III (E.O.II). This department plays a crucial role in ensuring community safety by overseeing road maintenance, park and cemetery upkeep, waste collection, recycling services, and storm-water management to mitigate flooding risks. Additionally, the department is responsible for managing the City's fleet of vehicles to support these essential services.
The Works Maintenance III (E.O.II) position reports directly to the Roads and Drainage Supervisor and involves providing skilled labor support to various work crews. Responsibilities include operating a range of light equipment and hand tools as required. This role may also involve restorative tasks aimed at rehabilitating City properties, including but not limited to waste clean-ups (additional training will be provided).
Key Responsibilities:
- Performing skilled public works tasks, including assisting work crews, managing the street crack and crevice weed control program, conducting sidewalk inspections, overseeing water service inspections, and executing the Uni-directional water main flushing program.
- Operating various equipment such as single axle dump trucks with attachments, pickup trucks, aerial bucket trucks, mobile crane trucks, portable generators, cut saws, jackhammers, chainsaws, weed-eaters, backpack blowers, tampers, plate compactors, compressors, and other small hand tools.
- Carrying out snow removal operations and other diverse public works duties.
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of Secondary School or equivalent.
- Valid B.C. Driver's Licence, minimum Class 5 with Air Brake Endorsement (Class 3 preferred).
- Valid Traffic Control Person Certification.
- Valid Industrial Vegetation and Noxious Weed Applicator Certificates.
- Forklift Certification is considered an asset.
- Other relevant workplace certifications such as WHMIS, First Aid, Confined Space, Ground Disturbance, and Fall Arrest are preferred.
This position operates on the following schedule:
Thursday to Monday
- Spring (May 1st to September 29th): 5:00 am to 1:30 pm
- Winter (October 1st to April 30th): 7:00 am to 3:30 pm
