Job Summary
The Clinical Data Scientist for the Air Pollution Exposure Lab (APEL) will play a crucial role in developing methodologies, conducting statistical analyses and spearheading grant writing efforts. This position requires a deep understanding of statistical modelling, particularly in linear mixed effects models and DNA methylation analyses focused on longitudinal data from human exposure and immunological studies.

Organizational Status

The Air Pollution Exposure Lab (APEL) under the direction of Dr. Chris Carlsten, is focused on understanding how air pollution exposures affect the lungs and the development of policy, preventive, and therapeutic interventions to protect human health. We do this through controlled human exposures that show us how various air pollutants affect lung health.

This position is in the Air Pollution Exposure Lab (APEL) under the direction of Dr. Chris Carlsten. This position is hired within the University of British Columbia (UBC), Respiratory Medicine Division. This position is a full-time, on-site position, located at the UBC VGH Hospital site; hybrid option will have to be discussed and granted by Dr. Carlsten. The incumbent is expected to provide regular reports to Dr. Carlsten on projects, tasks, and goals progress during one-on-one meetings. Frequent interaction and collaboration with research team members and other stakeholders, such as collaborators, grant funders, etc. is required.

Work Performed

  • Plans, develops and advises on research and statistical methodology for the Air Pollution Exposure Lab (APEL), including randomization procedures, statistical power, and selection of outcome measures. Specializes in complex modelling and analysis, with expertise in linear mixed effects models, integrative analysis across multiple studies and large datasets, including DNA methylation.
  • Perform statistical analyses, develop visualizations, and interpret data for stakeholders with differing levels of statistical knowledge. Make recommendations on presenting analytical findings. Collaborate on drafting/editing documents for publication, reports, and grants.
  • Collaborate with Dr. Carlsten to identify grant, studentship, and fellowship opportunities and strategize the feasibility of competitive funding opportunities for the lab. Lead or support grant proposals, associated designs and related communications aligned with APEL research interests.
  • Oversee quality control of collected data and assist in resolution of inconsistencies. Obtain licensing permissions for software or resources for the group and retrieve or deposit data in public and private databases as needed. Maintain access to large scale compute clusters including Compute Canada and UBC Sockeye and assist trainees in using these for their data analysis. Oversee organization of study data in alignment with APEL's strategy and relevant privacy rules.
  • Write and publish scientific publications as both a first author and as a contributor. Supervise graduate trainees, and staff where necessary, within APEL, developing projects, setting priorities and goals, and providing guidance and statistical support in collaboration with Dr. Carlsten.
  • Performing other related duties as needed to guarantee the success of ongoing projects in APEL.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Makes professional decisions and recommendations on all aspects of work and is responsible for the quality of research activities and achievement of overall objectives. Inadequate performance may result in failure to achieve project objectives, enable publication, and could have a significant impact on chances of receiving future funding.

Supervision Received
Reports to the Principal Investigator. Works independently.

Supervision Given
Mentoring of trainees and other Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP).

Minimum Qualifications
Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of three years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own
