The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. A key agreement opened for signature at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The Convention has three objectives:

the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal, Canada and is administered by UNEP. This post is located in the Secretariat of the CBD, within the Scientific, Society and Sustainable Futures Division (SSSF).

Under the overall supervision of the Head of the Monitoring and Reporting Unit and the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:

Responsibilities

A.

Compiles and synthesizes information from the Participating Agencies and assists in the planning, coordination, delivery and monitoring of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnerships Global Coordination Unit's (GCU) work plans and programme activities and in preparing consolidated progress reports and final narrative reports after the completion of specific projects and activities for submission to relevant governing bodies, donors and relevant stakeholders.

B.

Collects, collates, maintains and facilitates access to information through a database and online platforms (a) on the various National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) Accelerator Partnership support activities and other relevant initiatives and programmes supporting NBSAP revision and implementation in order to provide a continually updated overview of these and (b) on available learning and technical assistance opportunities, expertise, tools, learning and guidance material and other knowledge products, including case studies of good practice and lessons learned, in order to support the implementation of NBSAPs.

C.

Supports the engagement of and collaboration with various partners, including UN agencies, international organizations, regional organizations and networks, funding agencies, and other stakeholders involved in or supporting the implementation of NBSAPs, and facilitates coordination and communication among the Participating Agencies and with internal technical and administrative units and divisions by maintaining regular communications with all these actors.

D.

Organizes and services meetings, workshops, events and trainings provided by the GCU, including making the necessary logistical arrangements, assisting with the preparation of background material and documentation, preparing the presentations, and supporting the follow-up actions.

E.

Conducts the administrative and general office support functions of the GCU, including drafting correspondence, maintaining calendars/schedules, preparing minutes of meetings, drafting various documents and reports, managing office records, processing administrative requisitions (travel requests, purchase orders, expenditure authorizations), and managing relations with vendors and service providers.

F.

Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.

G. Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. H. Performs other related and relevant duties as assigned.

Education

Completion of secondary school education or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

Supplementary training in environmental management, social sciences, public administration, project management or equivalent is desirable.

Work Experience


A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant work experience in programme management, sustainable development, environmental management, public administration or related fields is required.

The minimum year of relevant experience is reduced by two (2) years for candidates who possess a first level university degree.

Experience with capacity development and knowledge management, monitoring and evaluation and project management is desirable. Work experience with Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) is desirable. Experience working within the United Nation system or similar international organizations is desirable. Experience working with office software packages such as MS word, MS Excel and Power Point is desirable. Experience using web-based management systems is desirable. Work experience in supporting activities in the field of biodiversity is desirable. One (1) year or more experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

NOTE:

Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Appointment against this post is for an initial period of one (1) year and may be subject to extension. This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
