The City of Fredericton is looking for a Fire Prevention Officer (FPO) who is passionate about educating the public in fire and life safety. While challenging, the position lends itself to an atmosphere that can be exciting and is perfect for someone who thrives in a team while also appreciating autonomy.
The FPO works a Monday to Friday schedule, with the expectation there will be occasions where they will be required to work evenings/weekends, as well as be "on call" to fulfill the role of fire investigator.
The responsibilities carried out by an FPO in the City of Fredericton are divided into three main categories: public fire education, fire and life safety inspections and fire investigations. This includes conducting public education programs, recommending methods of eliminating existing fire/life safety hazards and enforcing compliance pertaining to fire prevention and protection.
You will perform and assist in the investigation of fires, explosions, or other emergency incidents to determine cause and origin and prepare the accompanying detailed reports.
Education & Experience:
A secondary education and equivalent experience and training in the the job. Experience as a Fire Prevention Officer, Inspector, or Investigator will be considered an asset.
Knowledge & Desired Skills:
A working knowledge of NFPA 921.A willingness to take additional educational courses pertaining to fire and building codes and to obtain provincial fire prevention officer and fire investigator status.Carry, or have the willingness to obtain NFPA 1031, 1033, and 1035 Certification through an accredited organization.Knowledge of federal and provincial acts, municipal by-laws, standards, and codes relevant to fire prevention and protection.Knowledge of building construction, fire prevention methods, techniques, and procedures.Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.Ability to meet and deal effectively with the public and establish good working relations with other enforcement officials.Skills to create and present public presentations.Ability to recognize, participate and emphasize the need for continued education for staff members.Exercises sound judgment and works well within a team environment.Self-motivated, able to work independently with a minimum of supervision.A working knowledge of the French language will be considered a strong asset.Interested individuals may apply in writing to by 4:30 pm on September 3, 2024.
