Assistant Designer, Signals
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Assistant Designer, Signals to join our team. As a key member of our Signals department, you will play a critical role in the design, development, and implementation of our rail signaling systems.
About the Role
- Provide engineering support in the preparation, analysis, monitoring, and coordination of new projects or modifications to existing equipment of TTC's systems and related equipment for Subway Communications and Signalling.
- Assist with the preparation of designs, estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures, and engineering drawings in relation to the TTC's rail signaling and train control systems/projects.
- Perform engineering calculations to produce complete engineering designs and specifications, and design vital and non-vital circuits in accordance with signal design standards for new and modified signal design systems.
- Assist with tender and proposal evaluation, and provide cost comparisons, feasibility studies, and budget estimates.
- Assist with the review of external submissions related to subway signalling designs to verify accuracy, conformity with TTC specifications, and conformity with applicable code requirements.
- Conduct investigations into operational, communications, or subway signalling problems, and assess, diagnose, correct, and eliminate non-routine problems and complex failures.
- Evaluate and provide engineered solutions for operational problems and defects in new and/or existing systems, and investigate the effectiveness of changes in procedures, designs, or materials.
- Assemble, prepare, and/or review various reports, staff summary sheets, project status and progress reports, documentation on inspection visits, and other correspondence related to the work.
- Liaise with staff of various TTC departments to ensure coherence and consistency of information on drawings for relevant project components and designs that meet TTC's operating requirements.
- Coordinate, direct and guide relevant TTC staff and/or consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers in section specific design work, equipment or systems while ensuring compliance with TTC design standards and specifications.
Requirements
- Post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Electrical or Computer Engineering), or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed to be equivalent.
- Registration or eligibility to register as a licensed Engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of information technology (IT) concepts, including technical experience with computer networking and system administration.
- Sound knowledge of electrical or systems engineering principles, methods and practices.
- Good working knowledge of signalling design principles and signalling equipment, vital circuits and systems including Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) and Communications Based Train Control systems (CBTC) - Wayside and/or On Board Signalling equipment and software.
- Good working knowledge of signal system testing methods, testing equipment, computers, real-time networks and vital on-line applications and other associated rail signaling equipment.
- Experience developing and implementing cybersecurity controls, remediation of security issues, identifying and managing threats in Operational Technology (OT) environments is an asset.
- Experience with SCADA software programming, SCADA historians, relational databases, SQL, PLCs, and protocols such as Modbus & OPC UA is an advantage.
- Familiarity with computers and software applications related to the work such as Bentley Microstation CADD, Excel & VBA.
- Sound judgement and well-developed technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal communication and engineering report writing skills.
- Knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Authority Code, AREMA Communications & Signals Manual of Recommended Practices, CENELEC, TTC standards, CSA standards, and other applicable codes/practices/standards.
