Job Summary

The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, BC, Canada invites applications for Research Assistant/Technician 4 positions to work on a team-based project spanning pluripotent stem cells, lung differentiation, and genomics in the de Boer ) and Shakiba ) labs.

The project is in collaboration with United Therapeutics and seeks to enable the robust, large-scale production of lung cells from patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The project involves the use of single-cell RNA-seq, DNA barcoding, reprogramming, and lung cell differentiation.

The Faculties of Medicine and Applied Science have partnered to create the SBME, a new flagship entity at UBC, and a top strategic priority for the University and both Faculties. The SBME is a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation. UBC SBME distinguishes itself by deep training in biology, and engineering science and design, enabling SBME researchers to address the most pressing biomedical challenges of the day. Our SBME faculty conduct research that advances our fundamental understanding of human biology, and yields technologies and therapies that advance our health and wellbeing.

Organizational Status

Individuals will report to Drs. Nika Shakiba and Carl de Boer.

Work Performed

Successful candidates will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with the members of the laboratories involved in this project, integrating cutting-edge stem cell, bioinformatics and synthetic biology techniques.

  • Designs and performs complex experiments, including human pluripotent stem cell culture including maintenance, expansion, and characterization
  • Plans, organizes, and executes the progress of projects and participates in complex research activities, including:
    1. Optimizing conditions for lung cell differentiation for pooled genetic screens
    2. Genetic engineering of mammalian cells, including designing cloning strategies and creating libraries of CRISPR guides, making and titering lentivirus, transducing iPSCs, ascertaining transduction efficiency
    3. Designing strategies to create, creating, and sequencing next generation sequencing libraries
    4. Designing and executing experiments for Single-cell RNA-seq, perturb-seq, and/or other transcriptomics
  • Designs and Conducts complex data analysis
  • Performs literature searches to identify relevant papers and adapt the knowledge within to suit the project, presenting what is learned to peers and supervisors
  • Develop new analytical techniques and methodologies.
  • Develop and draft protocols and safety procedures as well as assists with modeling of new interventional techniques
  • Develop operating procedures and make recommendations for workflow improvements, increasing efficiency and productivity
  • Write comprehensive reports, contribute to grant applications, biosafety certificates, ethical approval applications and presents research results at lab meetings
  • Oversee the progress of complex research projects, actively participating in their execution and ensuring they meet objectives
  • Trains and mentors lab personnel
  • Maintains lab environment and highly specialized equipment requiring extensive training
  • Helps enhance our collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment
  • Contributes to cutting-edge knowledge in the scientific community through presentations and writing comprehensive reports and publication-ready
  • Maintains laboratory documentation and comprehensive record-keeping of their experiments and data analysis
  • Makes recommendations with respect to hiring as well as giving feedback to staff/student's performance

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Makes professional decisions and recommendations on all aspects of research work. Errors in performance of the above-related duties could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, reputation, collaboration, and financial status of the research project. Inappropriate judgment could result in fundamental flaws in the research results, in funding shortfalls for research grants or contracts, and loss of future research partnerships.

Supervision Received
Works under Drs. Shakiba and de Boer's minimum supervision, with additional supervision from other senior lab members; receives specific instructions only on unusual problems or matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

Supervision Given
May oversee and direct the work of one or two employees at lower classifications in which case they are responsible for the accuracy, production, and control of the work unit.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with strong background in either computational or experimental biology (or both) are preferred.
  • The successful candidate will be a passionate, self-driven, independent thinker with excellent organizational, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills, and a strong work ethic.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have skills in any of the following areas: stem cell culture, lentiviral delivery, lung cell differentiation and culture, iPSC derivation, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, single-cell RNA-seq.
