About the Opportunity:

Shape the Future of Our Organization – Join Us as a Director of Data Platforms and Analytics

Working closely with the Executive Director of Data Governance & IT this position leads strategic, data-driven organizational initiatives. You will spearhead the development and execution of a comprehensive data management and governance strategy. This includes defining a modern architecture and technology stack to ensure effectiveness and alignment with industry. Your expertise in bridging business objectives with engineering concepts and methods will be pivotal in guiding our organization through this transformative journey.

The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of data engineering concepts and methods as well as building and managing the data governance programme to ensure the organization is optimal and standard in its approach. The Director will be entrusted with understanding business needs, creating plans and leading teams to translate needs into actionable steps.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Data Governance and IT, key responsibilities of this role will include:

  • Technical Leadership: Lead the technical architecture, design, development, and implementation for BC Cancer Foundation. Oversee the technical data and advanced analytics team including our movement into adopting data science approaches.
  • Integration: Experience in architecting, and maintaining ETL, data migration and cleaning processes to ensure data integrity and quality.
  • Change Control Management: Manage interactions with various groups within the Foundation to ensure diligent change control. Collaborate effectively with business partners, source system teams, project managers, and IT staff to deliver data initiatives.
  • Data Governance: Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance framework to ensure the integrity, security, and efficient use of data across the organization.
  • Data Management: Oversee data storage, ingestion, access, and retrieval processes for data management as well as analytics and reporting. Optimize data engineering technologies and processes for efficiency and scalability.
  • Data Science: Drive the adoption and integration of data science methodologies, including machine learning and predictive analytics, to unlock actionable insights and support evidence-based decision-making across the Foundation.
  • Tool and Technology Evaluation: Evaluate and select appropriate tools and technologies for data engineering projects. Plan and allocate resources effectively to meet project deadlines and objectives.
  • Alignment with Business Continuity: Ensure data engineering practices align with business continuity plans.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Work with our Senior Leadership Team and stakeholders to understand data requirements and communicate insights and risks.
  • Staff and Contractor Oversight: Oversee staff and contractors with clear definitions of responsibility. Review workload assignments, conduct performance reviews, and foster an environment of growth and development.
  • Recruitment: Identify staffing needs, recruit staff and contractors, and make hiring decisions to ensure departmental goals and objectives are met.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science or related discipline, Masters preferred
  • Expertise in data engineering approaches, implementations, and techniques
  • 10 years of experience in data management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of data technologies such as SQL/Python, big data platforms, cloud data services (AWS, Azure) and data visualization tools
  • Strong data modeling and dimensional modelling skills
  • Experience with AI & machine learning technologies and methodologies
  • Progressive senior leadership and management experience
  • Experience in managing projects with experience in Agile methodologies

Core Knowledge + Skills:

  • Technical Expertise: Demonstrated experience in managing Data Warehouse/Analytics systems, capacity planning, and scaling with overall Data Warehouse/Analytics infrastructure. Strong data modeling and dimensional modeling skills, advanced SQL/Python knowledge, and extensive ETL design and development experience.
  • Leadership and Team Development: Enthusiastic leader with a proven track record of developing team members, including both permanent and contract staff. Ability to provide leadership, motivation, and guidance while demonstrating commitment to excellence.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to plan and execute complex projects with stringent timelines. Ability to strategize, utilize diplomacy, and handle relationships effectively.
  • Data Governance: Strong understanding of data governance principles and the ability to implement and manage data governance frameworks to ensure data quality, privacy, and security.
  • Innovation and Adaptability: Ability to create and support innovation within limited resources, adapt to new technologies, and translate business needs into data requirements.
  • Change Management: Ability to develop strategies for team members and BCCF staff to manage change and transition effectively.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to facilitate, persuade, negotiate, and achieve consensus.
  • Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of technological changes, anticipates opportunities, and ensures readiness for future technology changes and enhancements.

Salary Range: $115,000 to $140,000
