What we are looking for:

The Clinical Leader is a Health Professional who, in collaboration with the Patient Care Manager, is responsible and accountable for demonstrating competent leadership and patient-centered care. The Clinical Leader is accountable for the day-to-day clinical coordination of nursing and non-nursing activities through facilitation and system coordination activities, reporting to the Patient Care Manager. Your well-developed leadership and critical thinking skills, coupled with an outcomes-focused approach, will enable you to successfully lead and coordinate care within our services.

What we need:

The Surgical Admission and Discharge Unit (SADU) is a fast-paced, dynamic environment. As a member of the Surgical team, you will be responsible for the admission of and post-operative (phase II) recovery of both adult and pediatric surgical patients. You will be actively participating in patient safety and patient advocacy throughout the care experience while working in an inter-professional team environment.

Range: $45.87 - $58.98

Responsibilities

The Clinical Lead is accountable for performing duties in a manner that demonstrates commitment to developing a culture of quality, patient and staff safety through accountability, respect, excellence, reliability, trust and teamwork by:

  • Acting as the “face of the unit” with all stakeholders.
  • Providing staff supervision and unit scheduling as required.
  • Actively building and maintaining relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Ensuring participation in patient and staff safety, including staff training, skills drills, risk reviews, safety checks, etc.
  • Promoting a learning environment.
  • Participating in continuing education programs as required.
  • Prioritizing and delegating patient care, including regular patient rounding.
  • Problem solving with patients at the center of the decision making.
  • Collaborating with Patient Care Manager/Director/Professional Practice Leaders on a regular basis regarding critical issues and operational needs.
  • Prioritizing patient access and flow within and between departments.
  • Coordinating/facilitating of Emergency Codes.
  • Completing project work and policy work as required.
  • Promoting and supporting MSH strategic and operational objectives.
  • Applying knowledge of fiscal responsibility.
  • Demonstrating evidence of quality improvement leadership.

Supervisory Accountabilities:

  • Provides functional supervision.

  • Ensures that staff has clear direction, tools, resources and authority to achieve their goals and deliver the care they need to.

  • Builds rapport and relates well to people/patients/customers at all levels, managing conflict and resolving difficult situations.

  • Identifies and analyzes problems using systematic and logical methods to formulate sound decisions.
  • Appropriately incorporates inputs from others to establish effective results.
  • Supports the development, implementation and maintenance of quality improvement initiatives.

  • Understands and conveys the financial impacts of patient care decisions.
  • Works as part of a leadership triad with PPLs, Managers, and others as required.
  • Participates in and/or provides input to staff evaluations.
  • Provides support in, but not limited to the following areas: budget accountability, staff scheduling and conflict mediation.
Requirements
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current BCLS, ACLS, and PALS certification.
  • 3 years of current surgical nursing experience in a Surgical Admission and Discharge Unit (SADU) and/or Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) setting, required.
  • Recent experience in caring for preoperative and postoperative surgical patients required.
  • Recent experience in an acute hospital surgical setting is required.
  • Advanced clinical skills.
  • Patient and family focused.

  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in stressful, complex environments, manage critical events and exhibit poise, professionalism and strong decision-making skills.
