Environment Process Engineer

Introduction

We are currently hiring an Environment Technologist for our natural gas client in Calgary. You will be responsible for providing subject matter expertise and engineering support for compliance, permitting, environmental reporting and focused projects and initiatives across our client’s assets. The position is initially an 18-month contract and will be based in office in Calgary. Travel to Kitimat once a month for 1 week is expected.


Responsibilities

  • Design appropriate calculations to meet environmental standards taking into account the operating and design envelopes and ensure the alternative methods to assess environmental performance of key equipment are made ready and tested.
  • Build and design the tracking and operationalize the reporting tools to meet requirements in air and water permits. This includes being able to interpret key technical data with appropriate dimensions/units and perform appropriate conversions for air and water pollutants as expected by regulators..
  • Preparing and reviewing monthly, quarterly and yearly reports to the government in collaboration with the environment and instrumentation team and providing technical assurance to the same.
  • Competencies in data interpretation, validation and reconciliation, including being able to look at plant process data and complete data validation by ensuring that any erroneous data is filtered out in reporting and replaced with an appropriate engineering estimate. This also means ability to visualize and depict complex technical environmental dilemmas into quantifiable forward paths and set foundation for engagement with various stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance management systems are established and implemented to meet applicable environmental and company regulatory requirements, this with KPIs, auditable data records and sustainable reporting standards.
  • Understand business drivers to develop and deliver high quality, fit for purpose mitigations/improvements in addressing environmental risk areas, in a few of the following areas: GHG, wastewater/water quality, air quality, pollutant dispersion, estimation, measurement, waste control and/or related impact assessment processes. This includes short and medium terms strategies as well as masterplans if needed.
  • Co-lead with GHG and energy management focal GHG emission inventory tracking and reporting and provide technical guidance to existing environmental programs, with deep involvement in the newer methods of fugitive calculations and BC regulations.
  • Identify and progress environment opportunities and improvements across assets using the appropriate work processes – MTO, MOC, Project Delivery, ME, etc., have a front end engineering mindset with ability to create business cases for technical improvements.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, e.g., Operations, Business Group, Corporate Relations, Regulators, NGOs, and community) to deliver environment opportunities and risk management.
  • Support existing environmental programs and contribute to license to operate requirements.
  • Provide recommendations on the application of relevant internal standards, technical aspects of legislative requirements, and external standards & policy; partner with Corporate Relations as Regulatory & Permitting focal point on current and emerging regulations and policies.
  • Participate in external verification for Compliance & Assurance on Environment related standards, e.g., ISO 14001 and GHG emissions reporting. Advise on appropriate sampling standards if needed and support the laboratory in developing the suitable test methods as per the regulations.


Requirements

  • P. Eng. in relevant engineering (e.g., Chemical, Process, or Environmental).
  • At least 10 years of relevant technical experience, preferably at or associated with an Operating Site.
  • Excellent facilitation skills and the ability to influence others.
  • Able to manage multiple projects with multi-disciplined teams.
  • Preference will be for a candidate with knowledge of Carbon Intensity, Life Cycle Analysis, GHG emissions control technology, assessment, and design use.
  • Knowledge of Provincial and Federal Low Carbon/GHG Regulations
  • Knowledge of how we seek to integrate Environmental risk management into the way we do business.
  • Understanding on how we seek to achieve Energy Efficiency and GHG abatement in our current operations and future projects.
  • Experience of working independently and as part of a team on projects to address environmental issues.
  • In addition to technical excellence, this role requires strong ability to business partner, coach and develop, deliver change management, and facilitate and intervene. The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership attributes aligned with Leadership Experience.
  • Wider appreciation of Gas business processes and principles and experience in a Major Gas/LNG Project is an advantage.
  • Sound systematic approach to technical and multi-disciplinary challenges.
  • Strong analytical abilities having knowledge of process engineering tools and facility value driver’s knowhow.
  • Ability to contribute to decision support and assurance as well as carrying out hands on technical evaluations.
  • Communicate with internal and external interfaces with strong spoken and written communication skills.
