Purpose
The mandate of the Energy Services (ES) team is to maximize the company's risk adjusted asset return by providing portfolio management (hedging/optimization) and market advisory services. The ES team consists of three pillars:

  1. Portfolio Management (Trading/Hedging)
  2. Client & Asset Support
  3. Market Analytics

Reporting to the leader of Market Analytics, the Data Engineer will contribute to the architecture, engineering, development and adoption of LPCo's “Big Data” ecosystem. This data and analytical platform serves the needs of various lines of businesses spanning economic, risk and financial analysis as they relate to LPCo’s profitability, competitiveness, and growth opportunities. The Data Engineer will support and provide expertise in data ingestion, wrangling, cleansing, and technologies. In this role, they will work with relational and unstructured data formats to create analytics-ready datasets for analytic solutions. Our data infrastructure runs on Azure built with Python microservices in Snowflake for business analytics.

Accountabilities

  1. Build efficient data pipelines for market, transactional and generation data.
  2. Responsible for transforming raw data into a format usable by downstream applications that serve both analytical and operational use cases. This entails in-depth knowledge of distributed systems and computer science.
  3. Organize, implement, and enforce correct data collection policies and methods.
  4. Ensure the proper functioning of data collection software and applications at all times.
  5. Make sure that data collection procedures are in line with all relevant rules and guidelines.
  6. Gather fundamental power market, transactional and generation data from multiple sources/systems and implement in a database seamlessly.
  7. Create and integrate APIs.
  8. Responsible for data wrangling, extraction, data security, discovery, and control.
  9. Demonstrate Best Practices in data science/software development such as use of repositories, schema, and data flow diagrams.
  10. Collaborate with and across teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions in full-stack development tools and technologies.
  11. Perform unit tests and conduct reviews with other team members to ensure your code is rigorously designed, elegantly coded, and effectively tuned for performance.
  12. Support development of short, medium, and long-term energy marketing analytical tools.
  13. Support the development and automation of standardized reports (position, MtM, etc.).
  14. Ensure output of data is accurate and in a useful format for end-use customers (Traders, Executives, etc.).
  15. Responsible for scripting, reporting, and data visualization.

Education and Experience
Preferable Masters Degree in Data Analytics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
3-5 years in a data engineer or data analyst role.
Ability to quickly understand and conceptualize business requirements and deliver insightful, fact-based solutions to meet those requirements and build out tools in Python.
Advanced Programming knowledge is a requirement.
Experience with Snowflake's infrastructure and advanced skills in Python and Excel is a must.
Strong data structure, data modeling, and analysis skills including in-depth knowledge of SQL, R, and Python coding.
Knowledge of Power Market Fundamentals (supply, demand, reserve margins, forward/settled prices) is preferred but not a requirement.
High degree of motivation and flexibility, ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.
