About the role

On-site | Seasonal | Junior Level

This position will assist with basic laboratory functions, such as preparing client samples for analysis and routine lab maintenance. You will be working independently and in a team environment, with an emphasis on providing quality and efficient service to clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Support for preparation of water, dustfall and other matrices for analysis;
  2. Carry out necessary work scheduling and planning activities;
  3. Responsible for preparation and screening of water samples, including digestions and filtrations;
  4. Clean glassware and laboratory equipment;
  5. Monitor and restock laboratory consumables/chemicals;
  6. Sample shelving, archiving, and disposal;
  7. Prepare reagents, standards, and reference materials;
  8. Perform all required record-keeping and documentation;
  9. General laboratory clean-up and maintenance;
  10. Monitor controlled equipment;
  11. Operate and maintain simple laboratory equipment;
  12. Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;
  13. Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  14. Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  15. Other duties as assigned.

About you:

  1. Good English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);
  2. Basic user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), with basic computer skills;
  3. Accurate and efficient data entry skill is an asset;
  4. Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately in a fast-paced environment;
  5. Well organized, with the ability to meet strict deadlines;
  6. Analytical and process oriented, with the ability to critically think in ambiguous situations;
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  8. Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
  9. Commitment to excellence and a client-focused attitude.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required;
  2. Some experience working in a fast-paced, production, and/or preparation environment;
  3. Knowledge from high school science courses and/or basic laboratory safety is an asset;
  4. Experience working with chemicals or in a laboratory setting (ex. school) is an asset, but not required.

Physical Demands:

  1. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs/14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
  2. Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  3. Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
  4. Ability to stand for a full shift;
  5. Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
  6. You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
  7. Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
