About the Opportunity

This is a designated position. The successful candidate must self-identify as a member of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

prideHealth is a Primary Health Care initiative that works to improve access to health services which are safe, respectful, coordinated, comprehensive, and culturally appropriate for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. prideHealth works in collaboration with other services and initiatives within Primary Health Care and portfolio partners across Nova Scotia Health Authority to offer programming and support.

Reporting to the Primary Health Care Manager (PHC), the Consultant - Health Equity, provides advanced knowledge, leadership and coordination for prideHealth and Primary Health Care workforce development in the area of health equity. The Consultant strengthens the understanding and application of health equity principles, evidence, tools, best practices and supports to build a culture of health equity within prideHealth and Primary Health Care practice.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide expert level advice, evidence and best practice on advancing the understanding of 2SLGBTQIA+ health equity and health disparities.
  2. Provide guidance, direction and advice to staff and teams to assist them in the application of health equity tools and methods.
  3. Contribute to performance development and assessment of staff.
  4. Participate in strategic, operational and financial planning as well as priority setting exercises with the leadership team to ensure a robust 2SLGBTQIA+ health equity lens is applied at all stages of program planning, implementation and evaluation.
  5. Work with a team to develop plans to strengthen the capacity of Primary Health Care to apply principles of health equity for social change and better health outcomes for 2SLGBTQIA+ Nova Scotians.
  6. Collaborate with NSH and other partners to translate evidence, develop plans for building capacity around 2SLGBTQIA+ health equity and facilitates uptake and understanding of health equity practices and policies within NSH and with partner organizations.
  7. Coordinate local projects, initiatives and teams working on 2SLGBTQIA+ health equity and action to address disparities.
  8. Influence community health board plans to address 2SLGBTQIA+ health equity issues.
  9. May participate in the development of funding proposals for research or other projects related to 2SLGBTQIA+ health equity.
  10. Contribute to the transformation of the broader health system at the provincial program and system levels by identifying opportunities to incorporate health equity principles and actions.
  11. Abide by the ethical codes of their respective disciplines, and also to the ethics relevant to Primary Health Care practice.

About You

  1. Baccalaureate Degree in Health Promotion, or other relevant field, with five (5) to seven (7) years' relevant experience, OR;
  2. Master's in Public Health, Health Promotion, or equivalent, plus three (3) to five (5) years' of relevant experience (equivalent combination of education and seven (7) years' progressive leadership experience may be considered).
  3. Eligible for registration with a professional body as appropriate.
  4. Experience in planning, development and evaluation of health care/community health programs, services and initiatives using appropriate approaches to reduce health inequities.
  5. Demonstrated proficiency in the Core Competencies for Primary Health Care.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of oppression as a social determinant of health and awareness and study of one's own power and privilege.
  7. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders using a variety of methods.
  8. Demonstrated success in building strategic partnerships, networks, coalitions, and collaborative working relationships with a variety of internal and external partners to support health equity work.
  9. Demonstrated judgment, decision making, and problem solving skills.
  10. Demonstrated planning, organization and time management skills. Ability to deal with competing priorities.
  11. Demonstrated innovative systems thinking with an understanding of working with communities.
  12. Demonstrated high standards of ethics, integrity, respect and accountability.
  13. Successful applicants are required to provide a criminal record check to People Services and assume any associated costs as a condition of employment.
  14. Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred.

Hours

Permanent, Full-time position; 75 hours bi-weekly. Shifts may include evenings, weekends and holidays.

Compensation and Benefits

$37.60- $47.01 Hourly. Successful candidates may be eligible for our benefits package which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
