Position Overview

Casual Position

Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team to plan, implement and evaluate programs, outings and events that meet the residents’ physical, social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and cultural needs.

Essential Duties
  1. Complete initial and ongoing programs assessments as necessary to determine residents’ recreation and rehabilitation needs.
  2. Complete documentation and accurate records as required including: Program guides, participation tracking, monthly statistics, Intake documentation, Quarterly documentation, MDS/RAPS, care plan updates and action plans.
  3. Plan and implement programs based on resident assessments, offering new, creative and innovative recreational programs to residents on an ongoing basis.
  4. Facilitate one-on-one and small group programs on home unit.
  5. Support and roll out self-directed programs.
  6. Show evidence of being focused on people’s feelings when providing activities and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction.
  7. Plan and implement special events, community-based programs and outings.
  8. Evaluate and make adaptations to programs as appropriate.
  9. Complete equipment assessments and ensure that resident has access to appropriate assistive devices as required (i.e. wheelchair, walker).
  10. Provide most appropriate available wheelchair/walker for new admissions and current residents in response to a change in status.
  11. Track and label Rehabilitation/Recreational equipment on unit.
  12. Develop programs in Welbi.
  13. Provide residents with a calendar of programs offered by Welbi.
  14. Ensure that posters, notices, and calendars are up to date, attractively displayed and easy for residents, families and team members to read.
  15. Required to understand the nature and meaning of quality indicators used by the Home and to understand which indicators are publicly reported.
  16. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  1. Has a post-secondary diploma or degree or certificate in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, gerontology or other related fields from a community college or university.
  2. Experience working with seniors.
  3. Knowledge of resident population and programming for dementia and mental health.
  4. Experience planning, implementing and evaluating programs.
  5. Ability to use your imagination to engage others.
  6. Computer literate.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  8. Excellent organization skills.
  9. Second Language (Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, and Eastern European languages are an asset).
  10. Music Care Room 217 Certificate would be an asset.
