Reporting to the General Counsel of Samsung Electronics Canada (“Samsung Canada”), this individual will be the primary point of contact on day-to-day legal matters to Samsung Research Canada (“SRCA”), a division of Samsung Canada. This individual will assist with the provision of effective legal services to both SRCA and Samsung Canada.

The role will primarily focus on providing legal advice and support on employment-related matters and matters involving the protection of IP.

Role and Responsibilities

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Employment Law:
    • Provide legal support and advice on a wide range of employment law matters, including drafting and reviewing employment contracts, policies and other employment-related documents
    • Conduct compliance investigations
    • Collaborate with the General Counsel, People Team and other stakeholders on performance management and discipline matters; cross-border employment matters; and prevention and pre-litigation matters
  • Intellectual Property Law:
    • Support the commercialization and protection of intellectual property matters by providing legal advice on various projects and agreements involving intellectual property
    • Provide strategic advice on technology matters, including cloud, AI and machine learning initiatives

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contracts:
    • Draft and negotiate contracts and transactional documents in a fast-paced corporate environment, including but not limited to IP licensing agreements, SAAS agreements, various service agreements and NDAs
  • General Corporate:
    • Identify and advise on privacy obligations
    • Monitor and report on legislative developments, and prepare for legislative/regulatory changes
    • Provide general legal advice as requested by the General Counsel
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with global partners and affiliates
    • Engage in legal research of complex legal issues and provide clear and practical legal advice

Skills and Qualifications

Education:

  • Law degree from a Canadian school or a recognized international school
  • Called to the bar and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario or the law society of another Canadian province

Knowledge:

  • Substantial experience in employment law, including compliance investigations
  • Knowledge of intellectual property law
  • Experience in the following areas of law would be a plus:
    • Contracts/contract negotiation
    • Privacy law
    • Corporate ethics and compliance

Experience:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience, preferably with previous in-house experience
