Marianne’s Place shelter requires a Part Time Child Support Counsellor

Schedule: 10am-6pm Saturday & Sunday

Classification: 111b Level 1–4

Requisite Skills, Abilities and Qualifications:

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with the skills and abilities to join Marianne’s Place team. If you are self-directed with the ability to work effectively within a team environment, are compassionate, creative and resourceful, please consider this opportunity.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support children in their experiences of violence through individual and group sessions.
  • Support women in the impact of violence on their children, parenting and navigating the legal, childcare, educational and child welfare systems.
  • Act as child advocate and resource person on issues of sexual abuse and domestic violence.
  • Support women and their children in connecting to community resources.
  • Provide programming, advocacy and accompaniment support.
  • Perform administrative, security and maintenance; specific to children and youth program.
  • Provide crisis intervention and crisis counselling services to callers and residents.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution between residents.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of child development, effects of exposure to violence on children and parenting strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of child custody and family court processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with child and youth program planning, development, delivery and evaluation.
  • Proven ability in crisis intervention, trauma informed support, resiliency strategies and advocating for children, youth and women.
  • Proven ability to work from an anti-oppressive, feminist counselling framework.
  • Specialized training in sexual and domestic violence counselling, including childhood sexual abuse issues.
  • Specialized knowledge of trauma, mental health and substance use issues.
  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in child and youth studies or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2-3 years previous experience working with and advocating for children and youth.
  • Experience working in a shelter setting.
  • Awareness of rural culture and additional barriers abused women and their children face in a rural environment.
  • Solid administration and organizational skills with strong computer competency.
  • Working knowledge of current community resources.
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR and Vulnerable sector CPIC.
  • Second language highly preferred.
