We are looking for a Research Associate - Robotics and Intelligent Manufacturing to support our Automotive and Surface Transportation Research Centre. The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The incumbent will support NRC’s work in supporting Canadian manufacturers by creating unique automation solutions to manufacturing challenges. This person will be responsible for the development and implementation of new robotic solutions that will help Canadian manufacturers with their innovation and improve their productivity.

The Research Associate’s primary responsibility is to conduct research of international calibre in robotics, mechatronics, and mechanics applied to the robotized manufacturing of metal materials in the surface transportation sectors.

Additional duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Author, review, and critique research plans, detailed work plans, technical reports, and technical papers.
  • Assist in the development of research proposals including collaboration with external partners.
  • Review relevant state-of-the-art literature and prototype research/technology concepts disseminated therein. This may include both hardware and software development.
  • Generate reliable data and develop scalable data processing pipelines using conventional and ML/DL techniques.
  • Present research findings in technical forums including conferences, seminars, working groups, etc. This may include authoring conference & journal papers.
  • When necessary, travel to client site to provide deployment support of technologies prototyped and developed by the team.
  • Assist in data collection activities which may include national and transborder travel with overnight stays.
  • Observe health and safety procedures in laboratory and in-field data activities.
Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

As part of the RA Program you must have received your Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Engineering/ Science, such as Electrical, automotive, mechatronics, mechanical, or other related engineering background, within the last five (5) years or you expect to receive the degree within the next six (6) months.

  • Experience conducting research and development of innovative systems, apparatuses and methods of metal materials for manufacturing.
  • Experience applying research in the field of kinematic and dynamic modelling of complex robotic mechanical systems.
  • Experience improving the accuracy of robotic systems with force control and in real-time path correction of robotic systems.

    Assets :
  • Experience with vibration analysis such as frequency response function (FRF) and chatter stability in machining would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with applying rotational dynamics and gyroscopic precession would be considered an asset.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Knowledge in developing robot kinematic model, including:
    a. Forward and Inverse kinematics.
    b. Tool Centre Point (TCP) definition and calibration.
  • Knowledge in developing robotic cell physical model, including:
    a. Robot model with link geometry.
    b. Fixtures and workpiece CAD.
    c. Proximity and collision detection.
  • Ability to develop kinetostatic model.
  • Ability to quantify stiffness/compliance as a function of robot pose.
  • Ability to evaluate singularity proximity, joint limits, and collisions.
  • Ability to create numerical heat map (score) of robot pose.
  • Solid knowledge of programming and scripting languages such as Matlab, C/C++ and Python.
  • Ability to understand and publish high-calibre research papers in the field of robotics and mechatronics, with a preferred emphasis in the field of robotized manufacturing.

The intent of this hiring action is to staff through the Research Associate (RA) Program at the AsRO level, which is an early-career level position with a salary range of $74,230 to $103,093.


Note: Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As a guide, the current annual PhD recruiting rate is $74,230.
