Position Summary:

Reporting to the Superintendent of Human Resources, the General Manager of Human Resources serves as a key member of the Board’s and Human Resources leadership team, providing leadership and strategic human resources advice to senior administration and mid-management staff to support organizational effectiveness and goal achievement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the Board’s labour relations function and provides leadership and advice relating to all labour and employee relations matters including grievance decisions, arbitrations, human rights, OLRB proceedings, collective agreements and employment contract interpretation.
  • Responsible for leading and managing all workplace investigations for the Board, including CAS, harassment, discrimination, and workplace violence.
  • Leads and manages the negotiation of teachers and education workers collective bargaining agreements, and terms and conditions of employment for non-union groups.
  • Responsible for administering terms and conditions of employment for the Principal and Vice Principal, and Management and Support Staff employee groups.
  • Provides support and direct supervision to the Managers of Human Resources (Labour) and Labour Relations and Workplace Investigations Officers.
  • Participates in senior administration and Board of Trustees meetings to develop, support, and present HR strategy, policy and decisions.
  • Responsible for the development of human resources policies and administrative procedures.
  • Acts as backup in the absence of the Superintendent of Human Resources.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • University Degree in the area of Industrial Relations, Human Resources Management, Business, or related field;
  • A Master level Degree in Human Resources or a related discipline is considered a strong asset;
  • Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) professional designation;
  • A minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in Human Resources, in a complex and highly unionized environment;
  • Human Resources experience in Ontario’s Public Education Sector is preferred;
  • Extensive experience in contract administration, labour relations, human rights, employment standards and a thorough knowledge/understanding of collective bargaining agreements is required;
  • Training, working knowledge and extensive experience in managing workplace investigations.

The successful candidate will possess superior communication, critical thinking, analytical, problem solving and conflict management skills, as well as:

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills
  • A high degree of flexibility
  • A commitment to customer service
