Sustainable Buildings Canada (SBC) is a not-for-profit founded in 2003 by Canada’s pioneering champions of sustainable buildings. Our mission at SBC is to create and connect communities of learners, practitioners, and leaders, providing platforms to collaborate and share real-world sustainable solutions.

For 20+ years we’ve been a leader in advancing sustainability, enabling designers, developers, builders, and operators achieve high-performance outcomes. Our efforts result in healthy spaces, reduced energy and water use, clean and renewable energy integration, and positive behavioural outcomes.

Your Impact

As the Executive Director, you will be the driving force behind our long-term Strategic Plan, leading the development and implementation of key initiatives that align with our mission and values. You will work closely with the Board of Directors to shape the future of our organization, ensuring we remain at the forefront of making lasting sustainable change to the built environment in Canada. Your leadership will be pivotal in fostering a culture of innovation, inclusiveness, and excellence across our team of collaborators and programs. Your Day to Day

  1. Strategic Leadership: Lead the development and execution of our Strategic Plan, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and our vision, mission, values.
  2. Organizational Development: Oversee the growth and operational efficiency of the organization, including governance, risk management, performance and leadership that is informed by Truth and Reconciliation.
  3. Program Management: Provide high-level oversight of our programs and activities, working with the Director of Operations to ensure they are impactful and financially sustainable.
  4. Financial Stewardship: Manage budgeting, financial planning, and reporting, while ensuring compliance with regulations and funding requirements.
  5. Board Governance: Facilitate effective communication and collaboration with the Board, guiding the organization’s ethical and strategic direction.
  6. Strategic Partnerships: Represent the organization externally, building and maintaining relationships with key community members, partners, and funding bodies.
  7. Marketing and Communications: Lead marketing efforts to elevate our profile and engage with diverse audiences through various media platforms.

What You Bring

  1. Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Business Administration, Sustainability, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or related fields, or comparable professional experience in lieu.
  2. 10+ years’ experience as an Executive Director or similar role, preferably in a non-profit or similar organizational setting.
  3. Experience leading, or being an instrumental team member of, an organization that has developed, implemented and measured a strategy to integrate principles of diversity, equity and inclusion through all planning and delivery of the organization’s mission.
  4. A passion for the sustainable buildings industry and a deep commitment to the real potential the built environment has to bring about net positive outcomes for humans and the environment.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to SBC’s Values.
  6. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  7. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  8. Advanced skills in fiscal management, budgeting, and reporting.
  9. Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
  10. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, collaboratively and with adaptability to changing priorities.
  11. Fluency in French and/or an Indigenous language is a strong asset. Alternately, experience operating an effective organizational strategy for inclusion of Quebec and other language minorities in Canada.
