The Study Director will provide thought leadership and specialized expertise in leading and supporting growth project studies and execution, ensuring their alignment with the Company’s short- and medium-term priorities and strategies.

The role is accountable to deliver the work safely, at the required quality, on-time, and on-budget.

The Study Director will implement standard industry best practices to develop plans, systems and procedures to ensure their studies and projects are managed with a high degree of confidence and transparency.

The Study Director will demonstrate rigorous financial discipline to maintain and improve project economics through cost reduction, engineering, operations improvement, and other similar initiatives through the entire project value chain. The role will operate in a matrix environment and will manage direct and indirect resources from site, corporate and external business partners. The Study Director will establish superior relationships with all stakeholders to ensure successful completion of the work.

The initial focus of the Study Director is the Bald Mountain and Fort Knox open pit extensions. The role will provide guidance and thought leadership for other growth initiatives.

The Role will report to the Sr. Director, Project Services and be based in Toronto.

Job Responsibilities1. Project Development and Implementation
  • Embed the Company’s Health, Safety and Environmental objectives into all aspects of the work.
  • Ensure that the scope of the study/project is clearly defined across all stakeholders.
  • Oversee the implementation of company-wide processes, systems and practices, specifically relating to the execution of the work.
  • Ensure that appropriate systems are in place to control and accurately monitor scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Recruit, retain, and organize appropriate and qualified personnel to efficiently and effectively perform the work.
  • Ensure the work quality meets required standards through direct review or third-party review.
  • Establish the annual and lifecycle budgets for the project and ensure consistency with Kinross’ established financial guidelines and business planning process and align project activities to the site’s strategic business plan.
  • Work with Site management to collaboratively advance projects by defining organizational structures and communications methods that meet Regional needs as well as overall corporate objectives.
2. Value Generation
  • Ensure broad or “out-of-the-box” thinking is allowed to occur with respect to projects in evaluation and feasibility to maximize value.
  • At all stages of the project, promote continuous value-added thinking and execution to support project economics.
  • Provide appropriate levels of mentorship and guidance to the various team members and leads to ensure the projects are successful and that ownership of the outcomes is clear and at the appropriate level.
  • Review and understand industry best practices for project implementation and recommend improvement efforts.
3. Reporting
  • Implement a governance structure, a communication plan, and tracking mechanisms to ensure results are achieved.
  • Establish communication systems and procedures between project implementation personnel and senior management to ensure project progress, schedule, and cost status are communicated in a timely, consistent, and accurate manner.
  • Present recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders at various ad-hoc and established forums such as Quarterly Business Review, Steering Committees, Strategic Updates, Strategic Business Planning, etc.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, finance, legal or related discipline.
  • +15 years of related industry experience in the areas of study development and management, project management, project execution, and project readiness preparation in heavy industrial projects (mining projects preferred).
  • Executive-level communication and collaboration skills.
  • Proven experience leading teams and supervising and mentoring direct and functional reports.
  • Proven ability to provide leadership and direction to highly skilled corporate, regional and site staff using influence skills rather than formal reporting authority.
  • Highly collaborative work style, ability to work with project, technical and financial leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability in an international business context including the ability to work effectively with teams incorporating varied different business cultures.
  • Language skills in English.
  • Language skills in French, Arabic, or Spanish are assets, but not mandatory.
  • Must be open to travel, as this role will periodically require time at site (must be able to enter USA, Brazil, Chile, Mauritania). Travel can range from short, and potentially frequent, business trips to occasional travel to site for longer periods of time.
