How will you make an impact in this role?

The Financial Analyst will be responsible for querying financial data repositories to source meaningful business drivers to support legal entity financials and variance analysis, support market controllership in complying with internal and external financial controls / governance requirements for regulated entities, and ensure completeness and accuracy of legal entity financials with strong knowledge of USGAAP / IFRS accounting standards.

The position requires working in a fast-paced environment and constantly changing priorities. Reports to Manager, Finance Integrity.

  • Prepare periodic financial reporting packages to senior management and quarterly financial update to external auditors.
  • Analyse new product constructs and create financial accounting and reporting requirements under USGAAP / IFRS. Support the launch of products and business initiatives by partnering with business and other stakeholders to advise on the financial accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Build data queries to source information from data repositories to support the legal entity financial results and explain the trending in the financial statements.
  • Responsible for triggering periodic cost centre validation process to assess cost centre activity to determine if the costs are eligible to be charged to other markets, partner with stakeholders as required to initiate an inter-company charge out process and follow up to ensure its completion.
  • Support external audits including reviewing the external audit requests with process owners, participating in meetings, working with the process areas to frame a response to the auditor, and monitoring, reporting and escalating the progress of audits.
  • Responsible for coordinating and reviewing the preparation of annual financial statements for external auditors including assessment of note disclosure requirements per applicable accounting standards.
  • Maintain an inventory of spreadsheets used by Market Controllership and perform testing of the same to ensure compliance with American Express spreadsheet control policy.
  • Perform internal control self-assessment by testing and reporting for processes owned by market controllership.
  • Responsible for completing and reporting on quarterly accounting governance and financial control dashboards.
  • Support in completing the annual Regulatory Compliance Management Review and Attestation for Controls owned by Market Controller to satisfy the regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and create efficiencies in monitoring the integrity and completeness of financial statements.
  • Perform other ad hoc financial reporting, analysis, and tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Accounting designation (CA / CPA / CGA).
  • At least 3-5 years finance experience.
  • Strong knowledge of USGAAP and IFRS accounting standards and financial control principles and practices.
  • Hands-on experience extracting and transforming data from various systems and in various formats (SQL / Cornerstone / Yellowbrick / Lumi / Tableau etc.) and interacting with internal and external IT resources to understand data structures and underlying logic.
  • Proficiency in MS-Office applications (Advanced Excel skills) and Essbase/analytical software with ability to craft compelling graphs, tables, etc. in formats suitable for stakeholder presentations (in PowerPoint).
  • Must be a self-starter who can prioritize tasks and manage deadlines.
  • Strong data analytics and system controls skills with ability to interpret how these impact accounting and financial reporting processes.
  • Must be well organized, resourceful, curious, dependable, and detail-oriented.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, complex problem-solving skills, and transformation mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to collaborate across geographies in a matrix structure and deliver on customer expectations.
