Reporting to the Senior Occupational Health and Safety Advisor, the incumbent will be responsible for the coordination and administration of OH&S program activities and projects to support business objectives. The incumbent will partner with local business leaders to ensure compliance and provide day-to-day leadership in the continued building of a strong culture of safety.

Position: Occupational Health & Safety Advisor
Term: Full Time, Permanent
Location: GTA – Central District
Start Date: August 2024

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure Health & Safety standards are met by coordinating, promoting and conducting various OH&S programs and activities related to the OH&S Management System to meet overall company safety requirements through initiation and promotion of day-to-day safety policies and delivery of training activities for employees and management.
  2. Conduct OH&S assessments and periodic audits; implementing health and safety strategies and action plans; coaching and advising management of OH&S policies, procedures, practices and legislative requirements.
  3. Continue building a strong safety culture by promoting the philosophy that safety is a value associated with every priority, and is non-promote a safe and healthy work environment based on employee involvement, ownership, teamwork, education, training leadership.
  4. Co-ordinate training and development program for business unit by analyzing and assessing training needs; vendor selection; developing and delivering training presentations; updating training records.
  5. Actively support preventative injury initiatives, focusing on SIF’s (Serious Injury or Fatality).
  6. Be visible to provide Leadership, coaching, teaching, mentoring and coordinate communications of occupational hazards and risks to both managers and the workforce and actively work with stakeholders to minimize risks and hazards.
  7. Coordinate the Health and Safety Management System to meet overall company safety requirements through initiation and promotion of day-to-day safety policies and delivery of training activities for employees and management.
  8. Assist with the design of standards, programs, and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury.
  9. Implement audits and inspections that validate adherence to company policy and laws and regulations that govern the health and safety of employees.
  10. Participate in the investigation of serious incidents and injuries and advise in the preparation of material and evidence for the organization to use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  11. Advise on compliance matters and interact with stakeholders regarding interaction with municipal, provincial, and federal agencies as needed (MOL, WSIB etc.).
  12. Implement compliance process related to assessments and surveys (i.e. noise, dust, etc.).
  13. Provide subject matter expertise, develop practical solutions to resolve safety issues.
  14. Develop and deliver safety training materials; ensuring tracking system is in place.
  15. Prepare and maintain internal and external reports.
  16. Lead and support Human Performance investigations; develop and support others to develop corrective actions; monitor completion of corrective actions.
  17. Actively participate in the corporate safety network, leverage expertise to other Business Units/Regions/Divisions and help develop corporate standards, best practices, and guidance.

Requirements:

  1. University degree in an appropriate discipline or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and acquired work experience.
  2. 3-5 years of experience in Health and Safety, preferred in the construction industry.
  3. Possess a Valid Driver’s License (Class G or equivalent).
  4. Sound knowledge of OH&S principles, policies, procedures and regulations.
  5. Sound knowledge of business operating processes and procedures.
  6. Sound working knowledge of provincial legislation and regulations WSIA, OHSA.
  7. Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint Project).
  8. Sound knowledge of large construction projects.
  9. Knowledge of the rail industry is an asset.
  10. Ensure safety protocols are aligned with the company Health and Safety Management System, regulatory requirements, and client’s expectations.
  11. Conduct regular formal and informal site inspections to identify potential hazards and assess safety risks.
  12. Lead investigations into safety related events such as: near misses, medical aid incidents, property damage incidents and other serious events.
  13. Stay current on regulatory change and best practices in the construction industry.
  14. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with local, provincial, and federal laws and the government compliance regulations including: MLITSD and WSIB etc.
  15. Ability to be responsive and persuasive at all levels of the organization.
  16. Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects/priorities.
  17. Strong attention to detail, customer focus and sense of urgency to the project team and client.
  18. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  19. Ability to coach employees and management through complex issues and make recommendations.
  20. Perform work safely and effectively. Be able to understand and comply with onsite signage, rules, instructions and other policies and procedures.
  21. Exceptional organization and presentation skills.
  22. Ability to work independently and work in a high pace environment to a high-quality level.
