The Manager, Grid Response is responsible for the active planning and leadership to support the response and resolution of customer, system safety and operational events in a 24/7 environment.

The incumbent works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to supervise, plan and execute work safely (emergency, reactive and allocated planned work executed by internal and external resources) in compliance with regulatory requirements.

In addition, the incumbent manages the administration to support shift operations including; schedule development and maintenance, vehicle, equipment, materials maintenance and management to enable field productivity.

The individual will lead and implements process improvements in material and work management for Grid Response related processes to drive efficiencies and productivity enhancements.


Working a rotating shift to provide 24/7/365 coverage, the incumbent provides on-site supervision, technical guidance and mentorship to staff and works with external contractors to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient distribution of power to customers.


The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads a team of technical field and support staff to support the daytoday operations of event management, capital and operating work programs safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements using a blend of internal and contractual resource teams.
  • Manages the planning, operation and prioritization of work and resources in a 24/7 shift environment to resolve customer and system safety events. Creates, coordinates, and approves shift schedules to optimize resourcing. Manages the administration to support shift operations including; schedule maintenance, vehicle, equipment, materials maintenance and management to enable field productivity.
  • Acts as first response to address field contraventions (e.g. work setup, procedures) with third parties, working with internal and external stakeholders to resolve events and make conditions safe. Provides information to legal and regulatory services to support the timely and accurate recovery of claims resulting from third party events.
  • Monitors contractor activity to ensure organizational standards and objectives are met; coordinating with internal staff as required to support program completion; reconciles billing, certifies and releases payment in accordance of project completion.
  • Leads monthly safety and operations meetings with contractor vendor firm(s) and provides content on safety topics and delivers any required environment, health and safety and/or quality bulletins and any standard design practice changes, process and procedure changes and operational updates; as required.
  • Regularly ensures all contractor staff comply with training requirements and monitors safety performance of contractor vendor firm field staff through regular safety inspections. Conducts rootcause analysis and investigations, identifies nonconformances, taking steps and actions to document, resolve and close gaps.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • University Degree or Diploma in Engineering (Electrical/Power Line Technician preferred) and/or a Journeyperson Power Line Technician. A combination of equivalent related education and industry experience may be considered
  • Five (5) years' of experience in the electrical utility industry, involved in electrical construction, maintenance, and operations of all electrical distribution systems
  • Three (3) years of supervisory/leadership experience working in the electrical field; a combination of leadership and training experience may be considered
  • Valid Class DZ (AZ preferred) Driver's license in the Province of Ontario
  • Demonstrated experience in a customer focused environment with proactive service approach
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Toronto Hydro/Electrical Utilities Safety Association Rule Book, Utility Work Protection Code, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and relevant safety, electrical and environmental legislation and regulations
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical overhead, underground, network and URD systems, operating up to 36 kV
  • Knowledge of practices, standards, equipment, materials and engineering records for the above operating systems
  • Knowledge of emergency management practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of external contractor administration and management requirements
  • Familiar with reading electrical drawings, feeder/operating prints, work protection codes, overhead/underground work practices, procedures and standards Familiar with special work procedures and practices for hazardous work environments
