Location: 7 branch locations plus satellite locations within Oakville

Start Date:
May 8, 2023 for 16 weeks (position ends August 26, 2023)

This position is dependent on funding approval through Service Canada - Canada Summer Jobs Program. Conditions of the Service Canada grant state that applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 30.

What you'll do

As a Summer Reading Program Coordinator you will:

  • Plan and implement literacy-based activities and experiences for children ages 4-12 in support of OPL's Summer Reading Club program.
  • Organize and facilitate programs and outreach activities virtually and inperson at library branches, outdoors and within the community.
  • Promote Summer Reading Club program through various initiatives including outreach events and the creation of content such as videos and photos for various platforms
  • Deliver popup programming and activities to Oakville residents via OPL's Book Bike. Facilitate the circulation of materials from OPL's Book Bike
  • Support inbranch promotion and registration of participants in the Summer Reading Club program.
  • Work closely with teen volunteers in the delivery of programs e.g. Reading Buddies
  • Communicate and share ideas within team and with stakeholders interdepartmentally
  • Work both independently and as a team member to plan, prepare and coordinate all assigned projects and work activities.
  • Deliver excellent service to customers of all ages by adhering to the OPL's Customer Experience Values and being in compliance with AODA's Customer Service Standard
  • Take an initiative to create exceptional customer experience, and ownership for all tasks assigned relating to the Summer Reading Challenge.
  • Comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, other relevant health and safety legislation, and the Oakville Public Library's Health & Safety Program
  • Assist with various systemwide special events and outreach
  • Other duties as assigned

We're looking for someone who can:

  • Demonstrate creative flair in programming, and implementing children's activities for the summer programs
  • Use software/equipment such as Microsoft suite, virtual meeting spaces, iPads, and video recording
  • Demonstrate experience or interest in creating digital promotional content and with social media platforms
  • Work enthusiastically and effectively with children of all ages, student volunteers and adults
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Comfortably present in small and large groups
  • Utilize strong organizational and time management skills and ability to multitask
  • Work at any branch location and/or multiple locations as assigned
  • Exhibit proven leadership skills
  • Demonstrate significant experience leading children's activities
  • Work independently or in a small group

Your experience and educational background:

  • Experience with planning and delivering children's activities and/or programs
  • Experience leading projects and tasks
  • Experience working as part of a team to accomplish a common goal
  • Experience with social media marketing and content marketing
  • Knowledge of basic bike maintenance and bike safety

Working Conditions:

  • Physical and mental stamina are required in this busy multitasking environment.
  • Comfortable riding a bike on various terrains including parks and trails for extended periods of time (30 minutes) and in compliance with all health and safety requirements.
  • Combination of indoor and outdoor locations. Must be prepared to work outside in a range of weather temperatures and conditions.

Eligibility requirements of the Service Canada - Canada Summer Jobs Program grant:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulation
