Position Summary

Reporting to a Fire Captain or Station Chief, the Paid per Call Firefighter is responsible for fire suppression, rescue, medical assist services and other related fire and life safety services and for fulfilling these duties rapidly, efficiently and safely under emergency conditions.

They deliver programs for the prevention of fires, saving of life and property and public safety education. The work also includes routine duties ensuring the firefighting vehicles and equipment are properly maintained.
Philosophy
Rocky View County Fire Services is a composite fire service consisting of full-time, part-time and paid-per-call (volunteer) employees.

This staffing model meets the needs of the County and reflects the commitment of both the County and that of its various communities and residents.

This commitment to a composite model is unwavering and must be understood and embraced by all fire personnel.
Core Accountabilities

  • Respond to fires, motor vehicle collisions and other emergency incidents as required. Perform a variety of rescue related duties to protect the public and lessen severity of injuries.
  • Lay and connect hose; hold nozzles and direct high pressure water streams; raise, climb and work from ladders, and use or operate all equipment associated with the control and extinguishing of fires or other incidents.
  • Drive and/or operate all vehicles or equipment as assigned.
  • Maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to continuously perform all duties required in this position including but not limited to excellent cardiovascular fitness and bending, lifting, and carrying as required.
  • Endeavor to build a positive team atmosphere at the Fire Station and foster positive relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Maintain firefighting and medical equipment, tools, and apparatus to ensure readiness for any emergency service response.
  • Perform inspections, assessments and site evaluations related to fire prevention duties as assigned.
  • Organize, lead and/or participate in community assignments or events.
  • Protect privacy, use information appropriately, and maintain the confidentiality and security of all information related to employees, businesses and residents of Rocky View County.
  • Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to lifelong learning in the areas of fire suppression, incident response and personal development.
  • Demonstrate an active and ongoing commitment to and role within the community in which you work.
Position Requirements

  • Reside within 15 minutes drive from the Fire Station in Madden or Irricana.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Available to regularly attend training and respond from the community (live with 15 minutes' drive of the station).
  • Class 5 driver's license (non GDL preferred) and a 5 year driver's record with mínimal infractions.
  • Clean criminal record.
  • Satisfactory completion of a medical examination.
  • Possess the ability to lift heavy equipment /loads as needed (May be expected to carry equipment weighing 20 to 40 lbs up stairs while wearing protective gear weighing at least 50 lbs or to carry or rescuedrag individuals weighing over 200 lbs).
  • Possess adequate vision, hearing, mobility and dexterity to perform routine and nonroutine firefighting tasks.
  • Ability to react quickly and remain calm in stressful situation, maintaining selfdiscipline and professionalism at all times.
