Waste Learning Specialist

Reporting to the Program Lead Waste System Education, this position specializes in providing an environmental lens to creating new and updating existing educational programs for in-person and virtual learning. They will take the lead on conducting needs assessments, research, planning, development, administration and assessing complex environmental education and training programs. The Waste System Learning Specialist will also be responsible for determining the required systems and technology needed to administer training and programming to the public and to staff. This role will also plan and deliver training to support the development, learning and onboarding of temporary staff responsible for delivering and administering programs.
What will you be doing?
- Conduct needs assessments on staff and public training needs as they relate to the Waste System
- Develop in-person/virtual educational training plans, programs, resources, tools, and assessments, and deliver these programs as required
- Apply best practices to create effective and engaging programs that translate complex processes and concepts into simple language for staff and different audiences, including children, youth, adults, newcomers to Canada, etc.
- Collaborate with internal partners to produce effective educational resources for staff and the public
- Deliver public tours, group and specialty tours, including driving the bus required for delivery
- Plan and deliver training to support the development, learning and onboarding of Waste System Educators, who deliver in-person and virtual educational programs and waste system education at public outreach events
- Mentor and coach Waste System Educators
- Support hiring of Waste System Educator staff and coordinating their training, including providing feedback on performance
- Liaise with Waste Services operations to ensure accuracy of information included in educational programs and at public outreach events
- Act as a subject matter expert in Edmonton's waste system and respond to internal and external inquiries
- Suggests processes to improve team efficiencies to Program Lead, and implements and trains other Waste System Education staff on these processes
- Degree in Education, Adult Education, or completion of other related post-secondary program
- Minimum 2 years experience in educational program development, including experience teaching or presenting in a community context to different audiences, including children, youth, adults, and diverse audiences
- Minimum 1 year experience in program administration, or related area where customer service was the main focus
- Minimum 1 year experience in directing and supporting the development of other staff or volunteers
- Knowledge of educational and learning principles, techniques and practices of K-12 and adult education, including:
- Strong curriculum and program development skills including knowledge of Understanding by Design
- Knowledge of best practices in child, youth and adult education
- Knowledge of planning for and engaging different learning styles
- Best practice approaches to environmental education
- Knowledge of computer software and/or hardware used for educational/training purposes, including experience with tools such as video capture, presentation software, and e-learning development and learning management systems
- Strong facilitation skills, including the ability to deliver educational programs in an engaging way and adapt delivery to meet the learning needs of a wide variety of audiences
- Ability to independently solve problems and escalate when necessary
- Ability to make decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a focus on balancing competing requirements within the various units and ensuring service is delivered accordingly
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills, including the ability to set priorities and work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Slides, Forms, Drive) and the ability to learn and adapt to evolving technology
- Experience using or managing learning management systems
- Class 4 drivers license is an asset
- Experience using Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) is an asset
- Experience using eLearning development software (ex. Articulate Storyline) is an asset
