POSITION

FLOATER

  • The Child Welfare Floater will assume responsibility for temporary assignments on any function including Intake, Family Service including PAC, Long/Short-Term Children's Service at any one of our branches, in order to ensure the protection of children as prescribed under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act of Ontario and may be required to provide leadership assistance and support to team members.
    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Screening, investigating and assessing the full range of cases referred to this Agency, including the investigation of allegations of physical and sexual abuse.
  • Assessing the risk of children/youth, ensuring their safety, including possible admission.
  • Assisting families to mobilize their capacities and environmental resources to improve family functioning.
  • Make provision for the placement of children/youth who are unable to be protected in their home.
  • Assisting families through Court proceedings.
  • Collaborating with other community agencies on behalf of clients and the Agency.
  • Compiling reports, records and case summaries within time frames.
  • Assessing the safety and wellbeing of children/youth and ensuring their adequate placement in the community, foster care, and/or outside resources.
  • Arranging referrals of children/youth to appropriate resources and community organizations as required.
  • Liaising with others such as Intake Workers, Children's Service Workers and/or Family Service Workers, foster parents, volunteers, etc. as part of the service team.
  • May be required to promote learning and provide orientation and training to staff.
  • May be required to provide consultation to staff regarding cases, agency policy and practice.
  • Covering caseloads for other workers on occasion.
  • Works in a safe manner in accordance with the Society's health and safety policies and procedures and all relevant legislation.
  • Acts in accordance with and incorporates Society's Code of Ethics, Confidentiality, Anti-Oppression/Anti-Racism, Harassment & Discrimination policies, etc.
  • Uses sound judgment in consideration of financial resources.
  • Complies with Society's financial policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • B.S.W. or M.S.W. degree from an accredited University
  • Three (3) years experience as a Child Protection Worker
  • Authorized Child Protection Worker

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in a variety of functions within the Society;
  • Good understanding of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act and other relevant child welfare legislation, the Ontario Risk Assessment model, and Society policies, procedures, and guidelines as they relate to Society programs and services;
  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of assessment and diagnosis, as well as the ability to give ongoing treatment, make differential use of various treatment modalities and counselling practices;
  • Demonstrated comfort in the use of authority, and high skills in goal directed casework;
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise reports and to be able to meet deadlines;
  • Proven ability to handle crises in a calm manner and work cooperatively within a team setting, as well as the ability to elicit cooperation from others;
  • Effective communication skills and competence in problemsolving and conflict resolution;
  • Computer skills in current and new Agency programs;
  • Flexible, strong, competent, and able to work independently;
  • High energy level, enjoys stimulation and thrives on variety and change; and,
  • Valid G or G2 Ontario Driver's Licence and access to a private vehicle for Agency work;
  • Proficiency in a second language, an asset.
